I scheduled my appt. today to get a port placed. I have been putting this off for years and I am extremely nervous. I can no longer get a PICC line placed....bad veins. Can you guys share your experiences. How badly does it hurt? Were you awake or asleep when it was placed? How long was it sore afterwards? What about recovery? Again, I am nervous and need some info.... I hate this!

Not to worry--it's not too bad and is definitely a decision I would make the same way again. PICC lines were a problem for me also, so having a port has been a huge relief.

They put me out when they started and then apparently numbed everything really well. I woke up for a while in the middle but didn't feel any pain. After a bit, someone pulled off the towel or whatever was covering my face, said, "Oh, she's pretty awake under here," and next thing I knew I was out again until the recovery room.

Personally, I had to take a few days off for the placement. The muscle pain was worse than the pain from the incision, and the pain meds knocked me out. It was either take pain meds or go to work, so I stayed home for a few days. It took a while (a few weeks probably) before there was no pain regardless of how I slept, etc., but it wasn't anything major after the first few days.

I think you'll be happy with your decision--hope it all goes well for you.

By the way, there are a number of threads about this, so you can probably find a lot of helpful information if you do a search.

I was nervous too, but I LOVE my port.

I had mine placed in 2005. They put you to sleep to do it. I was perfectly fine once the anesthesia wore off, and I dont remember being sore afterwards. They accessed it the night I got it. Its a bring for meds and blood draws. It has to be flushed once a month -but Ill be honest and I've never had it done monthly (insurance issues) but mine gets used every 3ish or I make sure I get it flushed.

I refused for so long about getting a port, and finally when I had so much problems with PICC dressings causing blisters and allergic reactions, I gave in. Let me tell you, the port is SO easy and such a stress relief. After surgery some pain will come and go, but that is why they will have you on pain med's. Its not serious pain, but its a little discomfort. I think you will be happy with your decision.
