Portacath

For those with the portacath.....does the area where its at always itches? and how do you get rid of that itch? Cuz I got a portacath placement about a month and half ago and the area where its at always itches but i dont like touching it cuz it feels funny...So since it always itches does that mean somethin is wrong or wat? My portacath is placed on my upper left side....

i just got mine about a month ago and it itches sometimes. the skin around it is kinda irritated from the tegaderm when i had ivs (finished a week ago) and the incision is still healing and so that itches which is pretty normal i think. i've been putting vitamin e oil on it to help the scar fade and that seems to help the itch. hope that helps!

I've had three ports and they've never felt itchy consistently. My mother used to tell me 'if a wound itches, it means it's healing' but who knows if that's true. You skin might also be irritated from also the tape/tegaderm/steri strips that were on it for so long. Or it might just be itchy because you know you shouldn't be scratching it really hard, haha. Kind of like when your nose itches when you have both hands full and can't scratch it. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

In general though, you shouldn't notice it's there unless you happen to bump it really hard or something like that. If it looks red, or hurts, then I'd tell your doc, but itching is probably ok.
