My 12 year old son was just diagnosed with portal hypertension in November, and liver cirrhosis in Dec. They noticed an enlarged spleen on an ultrasound. He had an endoscopy to check for varices and he had a moderate amount. All of this was a shock to us as I didn't know liver disease was something else I needed to worry about. I guess about 5% of people with cf have liver disease. We now see a liver specialist and this has been very helpful because we have to be careful about which medications he takes. They also put him on ursodiol ,but as I understand it that will not help the portal hypertension as that has more to do with the ducts in the liver being blocked and the pressure that puts on the spleen.
Your son is young but if he plays contact sports the enlarged spleen can be potentially dangerous if he were hit hard in that area. I found a company called evoshield that makes custom protection and my son wears their spleen protection when he plays sports.
