Ports and ABX

Hi everyone!

Tomorrow I will be going on IV abx and will be using my port for the first time.

What are your experiences with ports and abx? Does it still cause the same irritation on the nearby skin (like with a picc)?

What should I expect?

What about showering?

I would love any stories, advice or tips! I am excited that I am now PICC free <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> That was always a nightmare for me!

I guess I should add that this is my first time on a full cycle...we tried a month ago and I ended up on orals because of insurance coverage. I am now covered so I can do this already!!

Christina, my daughter is currently on her 3rd week of IV abx. She is on two different kinds. She has had her port for one year on Jan. 6th and it has been used many times for abx. She never has a problem with irritation from the medicine if that is what you meant. The tegaderm does cause her some problems but we havent found anything better.
As far as showering...you have to keep it dry..you can use aquaguard or we use press and seal..it works just as well, is cheaper and easier to get.
