Ports and breastfeeding

Hi ladies,

I have had a million PICCs and am considering getting a port. In the next few mos., I also want to try to get pregnant and would love to be able to breastfeed. Does anyone know if breastfeeding is contraindicated with a port (since it is in the general area)?

Thanks!

I'm not even sure what a port is (I'm guessing a longer term PICC?) but I did have a PICC line in after my c-section for a couple of days and managed to breastfeed exclusively around the clock. It was tricky to keep things untangled but part of that was that I wasn't able to move around very well in general due to abdominal pain. Not sure if that's what you are asking but thought I'd mention it. I breastfed for a year so I'd say with an older baby you'd have to cover it so it doesn't get pulled on. Same for BF while nebbing, Amelia still goes after my tubing any chance she gets. HTH

I have a port and haven't had any issues BFing. The only issue I've had is accessing my port- with my boobs being so gigantic, it's a lot harder to access! Mine was pretty deep to start with though. I've even BF while accessed- just had to swaddle the little one so I could make sure that tiny hands weren't yanking on anything they weren't supposed to be.

i think caroline also has a port. i don't think it would interfer at all. it just might put pressure on it when you fill up with milk.
