I had a PICC for a short time, and it is hard for me to see how you could adequately protect it during contact sports. Maybe an ace bandage? The good thing is, the PICC is temporary. I have a port now, and I wouldn't feel uncomfortable playing basketball. I doubt that safety is an issue, but I would still ask the doc. The drawback is that the port is more permanent. If you aren't doing IV meds, you are still faced with maintaining the port every month (flushing the line to prevent clots from forming). It is definitely more of a commitment.

As far as playing with a picc it would be a large risk. I played volleyball all thruout highschool with a port. My step dad made a hard pastic cover that we then taped and ace bandaged around my chest to hold it in place over my port. I did get the ball slammed into my chest a couple of times but having the cover was amazing. Make sure that it is something that is almost a cup like where you can put a foam padding strip across the plastic that will be in contact with the skin to help absorbe the shock and have it raised about an inch so that the rest of the protection is not sitting on the port. Then my doctor signed a release statement for the school board so they would not be held responsible if anything happened and away I went!!! If you have any questions on it I would be happy to talk to you. just send me a message <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Ports are amazing, I love mine and I was completely against getting it at first but now you'd have to pay me...ALOT to take it out.

It makes IV antibiotics so much easier and it wont affect your daughter playing sports, even when its accessed. After getting it first put in, it could be sore for a while but after a couple months it shouldnt be bothered. I mean it will prob be a little more sore than if it werent there but not terrible.
