Ports and Swimming/Sunbathing

To anyone who has a port out there, I'm just curious about these few things.

I just had a port placed about 2 months ago, a couple inches below my left clavical. I read somewhere that because of that area of placement, you shouldn't swim or lift heavy weights agressively. Additionally, is laying out in the sun and exposing the area of your port going to damage it. Suncreen will be worn of course.

The reason I ask this is because I'm going to the Dominican Republic in April and will be wanting to swim/sunbathe....and keep my port in good working order!!!!

Thanks

Mine is below my left clavical(colarbone?) too and I swim all the time and sunbathe. I've had mine since I was nine. I've had no problems. I've never got sunburned there but its definately been exposed to the sun! We go on "sun" holidays every year and like I said no problems!

When I needed the port I had one in the same spot. I swam and sun-bathed as wells as lifted things... I never had a problem. It was taken out only because I have no need for it now that I'm just about 8 years post transplant. There are people, however, that can have problems. Just ALWAYS remember, "Everybodies body acts differently."

Good luck!

Hello ,
I just had a port placed in early Dec. (in my chest) and I'm doing just fine. Infact, I just got home from the Dominican Rep. and I swam in the pool, swam in the ocean, layed in the sun, etc. and did just fine. I had my last port (in my arm for 10 years), I never did anything differently. I do think that with this port I can feel if I strain the muscle it is attached to, but it doesn't hurt, I just feel it. And I plan to start working out tomorrow. I will take it easier if I feel I'm working that muscle too much.
Enjoy the D.R. it is amazing. True paradise. I'm not sure if you are male/female, but just remember it's very European over there, so MANY of the sunbathers are topless. I was a little self concious of my port...until that is, I sunbathed topless and I figured people weren't looking so much at my port as they were at other things.

I'm the original poster, and I thank everybody for their responses.

I'm female, and yes, I heard about that topless bathing thing. But as far as I see it, my port pump and scar are nothing to be ashamed or embarassed of, so I plan on letting myself get lots of sun.

HappyGoLucky - This is a little off topic, but how was the DR? Did you find that you needed to do anything different/special reguarding your CF? Is the voltage different there than here in the US (for my nebulizer)?

Thanks so much,

Haley 18 CF/CFRD

I have a GTube and swam/tanned no problem last year. I love my bikinis and was a little self conscious about the button, so I used a bandaid to cover it. No problems medically speaking though

I too have a tube. Im quite self concious about it. I wore a bandage but its hard to get o that will cover it properly. Once the pool is clean you should have no problems

Hi Haley,
I think you may have misunderstood me just a tad. No I'm not embarrassed/ashamed about my port. I was a little self consicous about it being that 1. I just had it placed, 2. it was the 1st time since surgery that I had worn so little clothing. May I mention that I do have an amazing chest....so I'm not embarrassed. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> I'm used to getting a lot of attention for it, however I have MORE people looking now that before. I'm not shy so this doesn't bother me, if it bothers others' they may turn their heads.
The DR is beautiful. You need to take ALL of your nebs, etc, with extra mouth peices, etc, because it is a 3rd world country. They did have a Pharmacy at our resort (which I looked at) but thats not saying much. You dont need an RX for anything there, however, you may export out of their country, but you may not import to the US. (I'm not sure if the US is where you're from.) Their electric is a little different than ours here, you will see the plugs on their lamps, etc, have a little bend to them, as ours here are straight. I was able to plug my neb into that just fine. (I have the Pari Trek). I didn't travel with o2 or my vest so all I did was get a fax from my hosp explaining I will carry-on my nebs/meds, and that I have a port in my chest. Security/Immigration is VERY strict. I had to have my drivers license, birth cert, and marriage license at all times when at the airport, etc. (I didn't have my passport yet, that would make it easier)
You may NOT drink the H2O there. They do not treat their water. You may drink the hotel water, b/c they have purifiers for that. However, make sure your resort has done this as well before you injest anything. When brushing my teeth, I used bottled water to rinse with, etc. Just to be safe. There were no other concerns than that.
We were in Punta Cana, and then sailed to the Carribean Sea. It was amazing. I dove down and caught a starfish. The ocean was picture perfect! It doesn't seem real. The topless thing was amazing. Not for a sexual reason, but there it is purely about self-acceptance. I thought "Oh I should probably lose a few pounds before I go." There was no need. It was a very liberating experience for me that it was normal to bare your breasts. It was a freeing experience and one I will never forget. It was an exotic, romantic place that felt like a true paradise.
Where will you be staying while your there? You will not believe how people drive there. It's downright scary. You will see 3-5 people on the back of a motorcycle swerving in / out of traffic. I swear, I held my breath waiting for an accident. I don't know if you have done much international travel, but you will see how the other 1/2 live. They live in shacks, with no running water, electic, etc. but you will see smiles on EVERYONE'S faces. They are truly happy to live thier simple lives, which in turn makes me take things into perspective. It's amazing. A life changing experience in many (good) ways!
Enjoy!
