Ports

Jenn covered all of the good stuff. I also have my port in my chest-makes access super easy. My husband and I are both trained to access it so the monthly flushes are really no big deal-we can do it on our schedule. You can request a scrip for Emla cream which numbs the area so that when it is time to get accessed there really is no pain to deal with.

Yeah, definitely get a script for the EMLA so you can have it with you when you go in the hosp too because sometimes the dr doesn't remember to write the order and then you have it right there with you when the nurse comes to access it.

Its a good decision to get one. I wouldn't have it any other way. I also access my own at home and flush monthly. WAY BETTER THAN GETTING A PICC LINE EVERY TIME!!

Also, don't forget to ask for a couple days supply of painkillers. Just until the soreness goes away after surgery. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
