Okay so i just got my first port ever on oct. 10th. I was scared outta my mind not knowing what it was going to be like to have it . I got it in my left side and its outta the way but it is very sore and the muscles hurt alot and they cut into my shoulder so that hurts too. I hate having to get it re accessed every week. its so upsetting to me. i become a nerves reck. This week it took twice to get the needle in and i almost passed out i was so upset. im scared to death of needles and i had my boyfriend with me but it was just so upsetting and hurt so bad. Does the dressings every bother any of you ? They drive me nuts. i hate some of the ones they put on. It just hurts my skin and i can never get comforable. So how does everyone else like having a port ?

I've had a PICC line in my arm, but are you talking about the chest ports? Never had one of those. But dressing the PICC line does make me very nervous. But like shots, do your best to relax and it will hurt less. :] Good luck with the port Jamie!

I'd talk with your homecare nurse about dressing options. I have worked it out so that the dressing has been comfortable for me and have to instruct new nurses on how I like it set up. As for the pain when you get accessed, have you used EMLA cream? It's a topical lidocaine which numbs the skin up so that all you can feel is the pressure of the needle, not the stick or pain. Just a thought <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Just ask your homecare for it and it should all work out! Best of luck and hang in there!!!

I have a port, I've had one for almost 2 years now, I got it the day after I turned 13, [not the best birthday present]. But yeah, I remember after I got mine, I couldn't move for a week, and everything hurt. They had me on like 4 liters of oxygen, and my throat hurt hella bad cos they had to stick a tube down it during the surgery so I could breathe, and they accessed it like 2 hours after the surgery; that hurt so bad. I remember being so scared the first time they took the needle out, but other than that, now it's perfectly fine, and I'm glad I have it. :] Much better than pic lines.
