Ports

I love my port (and my MAC computer ) I've only had it a year and a half but it's worked fine. My husband flushes it once a month and the day before I went into the hospital I had him access it because you never know what kind of nurses you'll get!!!! I also have a double port so one side is a little more difficult to get than the other. But I really love it and wish the Dr. suggested it sooner. Hope you get yours and love it!

Hi! I'm new here and just thought I would give my input about ports. Mine was great when I had one and it lasted for 5 years or so. It was in an odd postition (right above my boob) and when they had placed it I was not "developed" and as I grew the port was harder to reach. Soooo, they decided to move it and this one was placed over my rib cage so hardly any cushion at all. This one lasted a week and then it quit working. Come to find out the main vein the port was in began to clot and many new tinier veins grew all around it. So my luck with ports is officially gone unless anyone has any other ideas out there. Picc lines usually work the best because they don't have to go as far with the line. And of course my veins suck so peripheral iv's last about a day. So that was my fun with ports and so far I've been lucky because it has been almost 2 years since I've had to deal with that and hopefully longer because I am getting married this December!!
I hope to get to know you all!

It's great to be able to read all these experiences. I know I will be happy once I have it. I'm getting it tomorrow, Mon, morning. I'm quite nervous about it. I haven't gotten a straight answer yet about whether they're going to place a Picc and the port, or what. I just hope for plenty of twilight meds.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Hello. Well, I can say with great relief and thankfullness that I have never had a port or a PICC line. My sister did have a port put in a little over a year ago. She hasn't had any problems with it thus far. She previously had PICC lines put in. I always tease her when I see it because it is just below her collar bone and it is VERY noticeable and it GROSSES me out.

I must say, you are all very brave people. I have been fortunate enough not to have to have any of this stuff done. My last hospital stay was probably close to 20 years ago (I'm 35). I don't handle the needle things well at all. I think I will probably really be screwed if they ever tell me I have to have one. I think I would have to be pretty close to death to have to agree to do it. I'm really skittish about this stuff.

Good luck!!
