Possible Move to Raleigh/Durham

hey marlene,

i've been seen at UNC for about 10 years, since i moved to Raleigh from Michigan. i really like the clinic and the doctors. i think UNC is one of the best CF centers in the country, although i only have two others to compare it to. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> as lisa said, kathy, the adult CF coordinator is awesome! helps things run smoothly, is very helpful, caring, etc.

as someone else said, the allergy clinic is in the same building; i go to a satellite office in Durham for my diabetes care. but the doctors seem relatively good about communicating with each other about patients.

i have heard mixed things about Duke's adult CF program. i've heard a lot of comments that the main doctor (yes, DOCTOR singular, UNC has like 8) there is not well liked. but i have heard good things--and have a friend who was tx'ed there--about their transplant program.

i'm not sure what else you want to know. feel free to PM me with more specific questions.

and hope you enjoy north carolina!

Another UNC patient here. I was in their pediatric program until I was 19, then switched over to adult. I really can't say enough good things about it. If we were to move anywhere within 5-6 hours of here, I would absolutely continue to go there for my care. I'll echo everyone else and say that the cf coordinator, Kathy, is amazing. Whenever I have a question about anything from ordering a nebulizer to getting an appointment the next day (if I'm sick), I can call or e-mail her and she always takes care of it. And I love my doctor, and the other doctors that I've seen when she's out.

UNC is one of the leading CF research centers in the US, so I can't imagine living in this area and not choosing to go there for my care. Duke is also a great hospital, but for CF specific care I highly recommend UNC.

I have no experience in the adult clinic, but my son has been seen by the peds clinic since our move from Michigan 14 months ago. We love it! Andrew's CF has decided to "wake up" since moving to NC, and I feel that we are in wonderful hands. We are being admitted this week for more ivs, and I know I will find a clean, knowledgible staffed hospital waiting for us when we arrive. I would like to say that hospitalizations would have been easier with our family around us for support when we were in Michigan, but I think I would rather be by ourselves at UNC than with our family surrounding us in Michigan. (Even though we also think UofM is very good.....UNC surpasses them!)

i also go to UNC and like them very much. pretty much just echo the comments of everyone else about UNC. Kathy to me is the rock that holds the whole thing together. I can call her with any questions and if she doesnt have the answer that moment she will find it and call me back. i dread the day she ever decides to retire. I have been going there now since 2001 and havent had a bad experience yet. They really seem to include me in my treatment options. Give me a couple of choices and let me decide what i think would be best and take it from there. I went to Duke peds and dont remember anything really great about it. But then again i was a kid so nothing is great about going to the doctor.
if ya have any questions i would be happy to try to help ya out.
take care
