Potty Training with a G-tube
Just wanted to reply because I am also potty training our 2 yr. old twin boysone with CF (no g-tube) one without. I use the off name brand of pull ups from Wal-mart Whitecloud 52 for $16.97. I tried the Huggies brand but they have elastic sides and my boys figured out in 2.2 seconds that they could run naked so besides the high price I hated them. You also sound like he is doing alot better than mine so great job!! Maybe since you have to pull them up he won't feel like it's a "diaper" and they hold alot.

Re. the little potty- I actually think that is a GREAT idea. He understands the purpose of the potty in the bathroom, so I think if you explained it and had him help set it up in his room (maybe set it on a bathmat just in case) that would help. Even if he has to call for help, he has much greater odds of getting there in time than managing to get out of his room in time. I also would suggest you consider using the backpack instead of the pole if independence is a big issue- the bag and pump can be set up in there, and all you have to do is grab the backpack and go. We also have the pole adjusted down pretty much as short as it can go, to make it more manageable for Emily and less 'tippable.'

Thanks again for the great suggestions everyone! This morning, I felt like the tube was holding him back "from reaching his full potential". But, I have been brought back to reality! I need to learn to have more patience!

Thanks for the tip about the Whitecloud pullups!

I think I will try the "Little Potty in the Bedroom" idea tomorrow night. He is a smart little guy, maybe he will catch on right away.

Harriett - I am very interested in the backpack idea. We have one, but never used it. What do you do with it? Put the bag and pump in there and just lay it down? On the bed? On the floor? How long does the battery last? Would I need to charge it the next day? Ohh, I'm getting excited! I think this will work for us! I don't have to worry about the pole tipping over and landing right on his head!

Thanks so much everyone!

Times she has used the backpack I leave it on the bed, propped against the wall. (If his bed is low to the floor, putting it on the floor beside the bed will work too.) We have the Infinity pump, and the backpack has velcro straps that hold the bag and pump in place really well and a hole out the bottom that the tubing threads through. The pack is great, for wearing if the feeds extend past sleeping hours or just for making the whole thing more easily portable.

The battery will last through a couple nights' use without being charged. I usually keep it charged during the day so I don't have to worry about keeping it plugged in at night... unless Emily wants the backlight on, then it has to be plugged in.

My daughters dont have CF, but I second the idea of a potty in the room. When she was two, my eldest had the bladder capacity of a knat and would often keep playing until it was practically too late, but a potty in her room and the playroom really helped her during the day and night. My youngest never needed that. Every kid is different. I can sympathize with your son. When I was a young kid in the hospital, I had a lot of accidents in the hospital when I was on a lot of fluids. It was very frustrating and embarrassing. Give your little champ a hug : )

When we use the backpack at night, we bought a command hook (the kind that sticks to the wall and removes with no marking) -- and hung it by the end of her bed on the wall. If she has to get up she pus the backpack on.

We used the backpack last night and it worked great! He got up twice to go potty (I helped him both times). It was so easy just grabbing the backpack and heading to the bathroom...no more unhooking and dripping, etc. He seems much more comfortable without the "scary" pole. He first got up at 1:00 AM and his diaper was completely dry at that point. Then he got up at 2:00 AM, still dry. He got up at 6:30 AM and had a few drops of pee in his diaper. I call it a success! If we have a few more nights like this, we'll go to the underwear and try the potty in the room idea! I'm so excited!

Thanks everyone for all of the great ideas!
