Predisone

When I was on long term prednisone, yes, I did get puffy, hungry and as moody as moody can get. I really felt bad for my family, I was nuts! I also retained a huge amount of fluids and had to be put on diuretics to help pee it off, my heart did not like the fluid either and I went into heart failure. Mind you, I am very sensitive to the stuff and this was after being on it on relatively high doses for over half a year. Short bursts don't do much to me though...these days, I when I am put on prednisone, it is only for a few weeks with a tapering dose. I don't like the side effects, but it did do a great job with my symptoms.

Prednisone does have its positive effects, but can cause a lot of other problems as well. The puffiness is just one aspect of it. The other part is that you have to monitor your blood sugars when you're on it, and it can catapult you into full-blown CFRD if you're on it for too long. The appetite component of it is caused by the pre-diabetes effect of the corticosteroid.

I've had a lot of bad experiences with prednisone, and my doctor and I work hard to find things that work to control my asthma that don't involve prednisone. For example, I'm on singulair and Advair. Those are GREAT at keeping my small airways from getting inflamed. I also take ibuprofen whenever I'm in a particularly bad asthma season.

As you can tell it really depends on the person. I have been on it since I was five and I only gain weight if I am on a high dose for months at a time. I am on 10mg now and have no side effects at all. When I do a short burst I don't get any side effects either. So it is possible for you to experience only the good things.

You do have to monitor your sugars but I have only had to just start doing this. Up until now my sugars have be fine.

It depends on the dose you are on and for how long. I starte taking pred regularly after my transplant and didn't notice a change for really the first month. I did have an increase in appetite to some extent but nothing crazy. I ended up taking about 15 mg a day for about 2 months and then dropped to 10 mg a day until I was about 5 months out. I started to notice a change in my face around 1 month out. I got extremely puffy cheeks.

Now I am on 7.5 mg a day and have been since I was about 5 months out. I still have days that I am puffier than usual but overall it is the way my face looked before I started having major issues and losing a ton of weight pre transplant - I had a full face.

So again I think it is possible but depends alot on how long you take it and how high the dose is.As for the weight gain - try to eat healthier foods when you do get hungry. Instead of stuffing a burger in your mouth eat just a regular ham and cheese sandwich or instead of chips eat carrots and dip. There are ways you can eat and satisfy your hunger withOUT overdoing it.

Good Luck,
Lindsey
