Prednisone

I have taken it for years with little side affects, other than I eat like a horse when on it.

I had taken it about 6 or 7 times since 86 then Feb 08 I had another course
that came down to 10 mgs a day for over a year. I am working on weening off now
but it is a slow process when you have been on it for over a year, even if is a
low dose like 10mgs. I just got a bottle of 5 mg tabs.

When I begin it when I am sick, I start with 40mgs for 3 days then
start tapering of 5mgs everyday till I get to 10,, now I'm work on getting
off the 10.

When I take 40 mg at once I feel like i can walk up
a wall, it helps me a lot. eases my breathing also.

they've started using this much more frequently for me since they think a lot of my decline in FEV1 and inability to "bounce back" with abx is due to inflammation. They usually do a "burst" of about 40 mg. for 5 days and then taper down for another 5 days. I honestly don't feel any different with or without it, other than more energy and hungrier.

I think the idea is that they want to open your airways to get the crud out, whether you're having an exacerbation or not. In most cases with me, lately anyway, its been asthma and constricted airways keeping me from getting better, so it makes sense to try the prednisone first or in conjunction with abx. But, i agree docs can really overuse this, so exercise caution.

All my best...

Emily has taken short-term courses of this a couple times for the same reasons as the others have mentioned; due to inflammation issues & not improving on antibiotics alone. Once she started it, she was able to bring up all kinds of stuff that she wasn't coughing up before and started rapidly improving. She has taken 40mg/day for about 5 days and then tapers down.

She has side effects with it though... insomnia and becomes very irritable/agitated once she'd been on it for a few days. It does make her hungry but she's underweight so that is a good thing, especially since she loses weight when sick.

Once the pattern was established that inflammation plays such a significant part of her exacerbations we added an inhaled steroid to her daily meds and she's done better overall and not needed Prednisone with her last couple illnesses.
