Prednisone

I was wondering if any currently takes Prednisone or has taken it for a long period of time. My husband (32 years old CF and MRSA) seems to do much better when he is on 40 mg of prednisone but understandably his Docs are wanting him to come off of it. He is currently taking 20 mg and is having a hard time breathing.

For about 3 years I took about 10 mg of prednisone on a daily basis.and certain days took up to 30mg..even at that amount ...the docs didnt like it. Prednisone can have some very harmful long term effects. I know it can affect the kidneys...and other organs. It is a hard thing to have to cope with...because prednisone does help the inflammation in the lungs so makes it easier to breathe. How long has your husband been on this dose of prednisone? What other meds is he on? I would say to use as little as necessary to get by....and try other meds if possible. Hope everything works out for him! Good luck!Dea

Thanks for replying. He has been on and off Prednisone for about a year now. He feels pretty good when he is on 40 mg, not needing O2 during the day but once he tapers down to 20mg he needs the O2 all day. The Docs just increased his Advair and told him take that for 5 days and then taper the Prednisone down to 15 mg. It's tough b/c even though it can be harmful it really seems to improve his breathing.

I have been on prednisone for 20 years.I am now post lung transplant, but previous to that I was on it for 13 years. It is easier to breathe when on it.If the doctors are insisting on getting your husband removed from it, it must be weaned very, very, very slowly. But I would think at his age, that getting him down to a small maintenance dose, maybe even every other day would be okay. I was on 7.5 mg every other day before I got lungs.Yes there are side effects. Your bones, muscles, and possible diabetes can occur. I did have bone density problems, but now on Aredia IV, which is given once every 3 months for 2 hours. My bone density has improved. ( the bone density problems occurred after my tx when you are on high doses of steriods). I am diabetic and we are not sure if that is prednisone related or the fact it is secondary in CF. That is managed very well and having diabetes for 14 years, no problems. My muscles are not effected for the most part. Working out can help that problem.Good luckJoanne Schumluckylungsforjo@aol.com

Joanne,

What would constitute being weaned off slowly? My daughter has been mostly on prednisone for a few years now (most recently 20 mg every other day). She was dropped to 10 mg every other day and now 5 mg every other day over a two week period. Is that too quickly?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advanced!
