Pregnancy and antidepressants

Are any of you mommies on antidepresants? Are they safe to use while pregnant. I was put on them years ago because I was depressed and haven't tried to get off of them yet. They have also helped me gain and keep up my weight. So I still benefit from them. So I was wondering if you feel they are safe or not?

There are some that are category B for pregnancy (I think maybe celexa??), but you would have to ask your doctor which ones. I think - my opinion only here- that unless you cannot function or think that you would truly suffer withoutht them that pregnancy would be a good time to go off of them however.

I am not sur ehow I would fair without them at this point. I would assume that I would emotionally be ok but that could be a wrong assumption. I am making an appt with a phsychiatrist to see what they say. I knwo one of m meds is helping me with my weight and I am happy with it. So I am not sure if getting off it would cause me to lose the weight I gained after starting it. I will ask these questions when I see the Dr. I was just curious to see if anyone knew first hand because the appt might not be for awhile and I was anxious to know.

I hope I can get off these meds and be ok with it. But we will see. Thanks

just a side note...if you are having trouble maintaining weight before pregnancy, gaining the proper weight during your pregnancy will be a very big part of your each and every day.

Hi,

Definitely ask your psychiatrist about the risk of the med(s) during pregnancy. If there is little or no risk, I would recommend staying on them during the pregnancy; although, the OB's always recommend you come off as much as you can.

Regarding the weight gain...I was on an antiaxiety pill before and it caused me to go from 160 lbs to 190 lbs (I am 5'8") in about a year. I have been off the pills for over a year now and my weight has stayed the exact same. I initially lost about 5 lbs and then actually gained it back. So maybe you'll be like me and not lose the weight after coming off the med(s) <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

Leah,,
thanks for your input. I was thinking the same thing and wondering if I have gained all this weight with the meds and my weight is staying the same, whether I would lose the weight after stopping the meds.

I am glad to hear that its possible to keep the weight on.

Lauren,
You are right about the weight being a issue while and before I am pregnant. I for sure do not want to lose the weight and if I did I would reasses my plans to get pregnant. A healthy weight is very important, and not something to take lightly, as I found out the hard way a couple of times when I have gotten sick.
