Pregnancy and Bowel Blockages (DIOS)

Hi there

I've posted on this forum in the past during the 2 years I was trying to conceive through fertility treatment. Well, the exciting news is that after 6 rounds of IUI I am now 13 weeks pregnant! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

I wondered if anyone could share their experiences of coping with the effects of pregnancy on CF bowel blockage problems? I have major problems with this (we call it DIOS - Distal Intestinal Obstruction Syndrome - here in the UK) as my bowels are always blocking and everything moves through them very slowly, even though I take 6 sachets of Movicol a day (laxatives).

Before pregnancy things were difficult but manageable (regular swelling, some discomfort etc) but now things are more difficult, due to the effects of progesterone which slows bowel movements and also (I think) due to the growing size of the baby.

I am struggling to eat as I feel constantly sick and am usually sick at least once each day after I've eaten. I'm also feeling very squashed and uncomfortable inside.

My CF and obstetric team are keeping a close eye on things but I'm concerned that as the baby grows, this problem is only going to get worse. There also seems to be risks attached to large doses of laxatives as they could stimulate uterine contractions.

Any help of feedback from those who have dealt with this in pregnancy would be really appreciated. Thank you!

when i was 6 weeks preg i started having severe pains in my lower abdomen-i thought i was having a miscarriage bc the pain was so sudden and so bad. i've had bowel blocks before, but this felt ten times worse.
i went to the er and the baby checked out fine.
the next day i went to my cf doc and they felt my abdomen and felt alot of stool-she told me to go home and drink as much prune juice as i could handle.
after that i had a huge bm, and felt fine.
i really had to drink alot while i was preg, and take alot of fiber, including fiber supplements. i didn't do any laxatives, and if you can stay away from that thats best. up your fiber, and liquids, and look into natural supplements to keep you regular. that worked best for me.

I too was going to suggest prune (or pear or apple) juices. (make sure they are 100% juice). LOTS of fiber and a fiber supplement. Also look into the new yogarts they have out like the danon active.

I also found that when I was preggo I could not take my enzymes or I would have lots of issues. I found that if I lowered the dosage from the 6 down to 1-2 I was fine (sometimes I didn't take any). Of course discuss it with your doc first.

Thanks guys, over the last few years I have tried everything natural (fibre, drinking water all day long, prune juice, etc) and none of it helps unfortunately. In fact the more fibre I eat the more I block and swell up, which apparently isn't uncommon in CF as it bulks the stools out even more and if they aren't moving then this can make things worse. The doctors think its due to all the sticky mucus blocking things up, but have never encountered a case so bad. Even the gastroenterologist said that apart from enemas and powerful laxatives he couldn't offer any solution.

Today I've been looking 9 months pregnant, not 3 months, and could barely move. I am going to keep taking the prunes, fruit juices, achidophillus supplements and fluids etc. as it can't do any harm but I'd love to find something that worked! Someone also suggested Tamarind but I can't find where to buy it (its another natural fruit), don't know if anyone has heard of this?

It's interesting to hear that taking less Creon may help. Thanks for your replies, its nice to have somewhere to ask questions. Hope you are all well.
