Pregnancy Question

I have a question. My husband has CF and had a double lung transplant in October 2006. After the transplant, the coordinator told us (to my devistation) that we would not be able to have children because of all the medications that he is taking. I was wondering if anyone else has a similar situation. I know that we would need to use artificial measures to conceive and wanted to see if this was something anyone else has been through.

Hi.

I'm pre-tx, but have been told that post-tx, though I can conceive and carry a child, that it's not recommended because there are 2 antirejection drugs that are harmful to the fetus.

My husband and I are looking into IVF/freezing my eggs pre-tx to harvest them post-tx and use a surrogate.

I would definitely consult with a fertility clinic about your options. It doesn't look like you can use your husband's sperm b/c it has those antirejection drugs in it, but if you'd consider a donor's sperm you could do the IVF. Not ideal, I know, and also a very personal decision.

I am surprised your tx clinic didn't go over these issues pre-tx!!! I believe you could've saved his sperm for post-tx IVF, but again, I don't have a ton of experience with this so don't quote me on that.

Have you talked to a reproductive endocronologist about this? I wouldn't rely solely on the words of the cordinator, she/he isn't a specialist in the reproductive department. I'll even ask my own RE if you need me to....
