Hello Kathi, I am a 24 year old woman with cf and I have a 5 year old son without cf. I was so happy when I found out I was pregnant even though I was only 19. I worried about how it would effect my health and I spent alot of time at the doctors. I was considered a high risk pregnancy but lucky for me it all went smoothly. I had alot more coughing fits and felt drained alot of the time but I felt pretty good. At the end of my pregnancy I could hardly breath it felt like he was smashing my lungs. I coughed alot more and I was worried when the baby came he would never get some sleep becasue of all my coughing. My mom reasured me that he was already used to it and he'll be fine (he was). I ended up being enduced. I had him naturaly and all I needed was some oxygen. Now that he is 5 and it was all said and done I am so happy I had him. I was on the younger side but I think that helped becasue I was still in pretty good health. I have found that it is hard to juggle being a wife and a mother and making sure that I keep myself healthy. My son knows that I have cf but he doesn't act like I am sick he still gets mad when I won't go outside and run and play with him. As long as you are in pretty good health and your doctor says it will be fine to carry the babies everything should go smoothly. Congradulations and just be happy that your able to be a mother. Good Luck...Sharie

Hi Kathi,I do not have CF, but my daughter does. However, I do know what it is like to be pregnant with twins. There is enough anxiety there let alone adding CF to the whole picture.Just remember that these precious babies are a blessing, and that you CAN handle this. Enjoy this experience! Love those babies...and sleep now because once they come, sleep will be a thing of the past. It is truly amazing how one learns to function on very little sleep. But just so you know, every lost minute, every dirty diaper (and there are A LOT of them), every moment when both are screaming...are quickly forgotten the moment they look at you and smile, or call you mommy, or stop crying when you pick them up.In case anyone ever says "boy you'll have your hands full" (it's amazing what an insult that can sound like)...just know that it is always better full than empty.Good luck.Christiemommy to 21 mo twins Malachi wo cf and Mylee wcf

dear kathi,i haven't been pregnant yet, but there are some things i wanted to say.there's a woman here in israel, she over 40 now. she has cf and 3 kids. my doctor told me it's advised to cf women to have one pregnancy, if you're doing real good - two. well, M beat the odds. her third pregnancy was filmed and so was the delivery and it made a part of a great documentary about motherhood shown here a while ago. i recall watching it when i was about 16 and crying afterwards, being very happy - i want kids of my own someday. i have encountered M ever since, in the clinic and such, she's doing great, she looks much younger than her age, she has beautiful kids [their photograph is at the nurse's room]. anyhow, i recall in the film she was talking about how it's very important to do sports - she went on walks and swam - and have the doctors watching you closely. she said by the end of pregnancy it's harder to breathe, but that happens to every pregnant woman since the lungs don't have as much room anymore. in any case, other than M, there were a lot of cf women here who had, have and will have babies. it's somewhat harder but they went through that and have healthy kids. good luck, kathi mazal tov! keep us updated!

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!I am a 29 y/o cfer and trying to get pregnant with my wonderful partner. I have discussed this with my doctor and he says go for it if i have a good support base with my family and partner because i'll need them. I hope you have this with your extended family and friends. don't be too proud to accept help. they wouldn't offer if they didn't want to!that's all the (unsolicited) advice i can give.every best wish to you, your partner and your new family. I know a couple of cf women here with children and they are doing fine.

Hi Diane. Well here is my story. My husband and I got married and started to try to conceive right away. After a year I consulted a fertility doctor. After many tests, they could not come up with a definite reason why we could not get pregnant. So I started Clomid for about 5 months, still no results. We then did an IUI and conceived TWINS on the 1st try. The doctor confoirmed there were alot of mucus secretions in my cervex that was probably causing the infertility.I am now in the beginning of my 5th month, and I will be honest it has not been easy. To add to my stress, as my pregnancy began, my mother became gravely ill, and died 4 weeks ago. So my weight never took off I have only gained 6 pounds and was already underweight. I also came down with a nasty lung infection that I am currently fighting in the hospital on IV drugs and O2. It is harder for me to breath and the infection is not clearing up quick.I am always looking for stories of strength or inspiration to get me through this time right now. I hope in time I can be one of those stories.KathiKathibella@aol.com
