I think we are more worried about having a second child in the house then with the diagnosis. Well for the real question? Any advice? Seriously is there anything I should expect when dealing with newborn and CF? Any tips would be great!! My wife is 37 weeks now so only a few more to go.

I'm confused with what you are asking you are saying having a second child with the diagnosis? So you have another kid with CF? Are you not the birth father of that child or what? If you can please clarify. As far as dealing with infants and CF I have no input really I'll let someone else answer it. I just had to ask because I'm confused.

Unfortunately, it all depends on how it presents. Our little one was born with some immediate health concerns related to CF. Some don't have any immediate issues.
He's now almost 14 months old and CF for him, so far, has been almost exclusively digestive issues - horrible reflux, failure to thrive, feeding tube, pancreatic insufficiency.
I've talked to another parent who has a newborn with CF who has already had 2 hospital stays for lung infections. It all depends.
Sorry there isn't one answer for you!
Congratulations on the new addition to your family!

I would make sure there's a high level NICU at your hospital and that they've been monitoring the baby via ultrasound for any signs of bright bowel, possible meconium illeus (Bowel Obstruction). Otherwise, IMO treat her like a normal baby who just needs a few extra things to keep her happy and healthy -- vitamins, enzymes, nebulizer and chest physiotherapy.

Also being that it's cold and flu season, make sure any visitors wash hands before holding the new baby. Being that your older daughter is a toddler --- aka germ factory... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> may want to try to keep her from touching her new siblings face, get her in the habit of washing hands, using hand sanitizer as well. First thing any of us do when we come home or get into the car from the store, etc. is to use hand sanitizer or wash hands.

First, DO NOT depent on non CF specialists (Doctors) to give you the proper information regarding the health of the baby. Contact your nearest APPROVED CF CENTER and get them in the loop ASAP.

Welcome. Do you have a CF pediatrician already lined up for your baby? Do you know which CF center you will be taking your baby to when the baby is born? A good CF doc and Clinic is very important for the health of your baby. You can find an accreditated CF center at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's www.cff.org.

Most CF newborns need pancreatic enzymes prior to each feeding. Breastfeeding is absolutely an option, I breastfed both my kids and my daughter with CF had ALOT of issues in the beginning and we got through it, so it can be done. If your wife is planning on breastfeeding I would be happy to answer any questions in regards to that.

If you have family that can help you by all means take the help. From anything to providing some meals or spending time with your non CF child to helping with laundry.

Also, since you do have another child; make sure you spend quality time alone with that child. CF can be all consuming and it is important to take a moment and spend that extra time with your non CF child, reading them a book, going to movie; just giving them a little extra attention. This is a great time for you to use that opportunity to bond with your non CF child or have a grandparent do that. I remember when my daughter with CF was in the hospital; my in laws took my son out for ice cream and to the children's museum, they did it without even asking cause my husband an I were so preoccupied.

Always ask questions; write things down so you don't forget; YOU and Your WIFE will be your child's advocate.
