I really don't worry about my children, Sophia and Jack spreading bacteria between each other. I guess I realize there is nothing I can do to prevent bacteria being spread except for not sharing utensils and nebulizer equipment. Sophia and Jack did not culture the same bacteria for their first two years. Sophia has always just cultured staph. Jack cultured E. Coli then psuedomonas once. His cultures have been clean this past year but recently cultured staph for the first time.
I do get a little nervous when they are around their cousin however. We live about 30 minutes away from each other, but only see each other about every six weeks or so for a few hours. We make sure they don't ride in the car together or do treatments in the same house. Their cousin has only cultured one bacteria, staph. I have 11 other nieces and nephews and my siblings have been tested for the gene. I didn't even really worry at all about their children being born with the disease once the in-law tested negative. The chance of your sweet nephew having cf as you know is low, so try not to worry about it. But as you are aware we both have faced low odds of having both of our kids diagnosed with cf, so anything is possible. At least you know the signs to look for.
Sharon, mom of Sophia, 4 and Jack, 2 both with cf, aunt to Joseph, 8 with cf
