Get a pinwheel and let him blow into that and make it twirl. They use them in our CF clinic for the kids to teach them how to blow.

We used to use the blow paints. My girls loved them when they were little and you had to blow pretty hard to get the paint to come out, and the reward was a paper filled with great splashes of color<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I'm glad you asked this question. My son will be 5 next month. I wonder why some clinics start at such an early age (one poster said that her daughter started at 2.5). I'm a little confused about our clinic...I dont think they are all on the same page. At my sons clinic visit last week the respirtory therapist said that he would blow that day because they had changed the age to start it to 4 years old...so she didn't check his oxygen saturation...then when the doctor came in he said he would not do it that day because he was to young to get an accurate reading....so now I'm confused. Looking back I guess I should have asked questions but I was so ready to get out of there after three hours I guess I just didn't think about it. Anyway I guess I do need to start getting my ds prepared...i'm going to try those party blowers!

I am a speech pathologist and one of the things I do with my kids seems like it might be good for this purpose. I have them blow through a straw and try to push a cotton ball across the table. You might practice getting them to make the cotton ball jump quick and far for the FEV1 part and then keep blowwing until your "bunny" or cottonball crosses the finish line for the rest of the blow. It would be helpful to have something instead of a straw with a wider opening so the feel is the same. Something not quite as big as a TP roll. Anyway....you get the idea.

Blow Lots and Lots of Balloons!

Also, holding your breath will help your lungs stretch. Take in all the air you can, and hold it for as long as possible. Try to extend the time every time.
