Prevacid questions

I was wondering if someone could answer this question for me. First off, my daughter Morgan (3 1/2 yrs.) has not been gaining weight in a while, in fact she's lost about 1/2 lb. or so over the last 3 months and 3 three months prior between clinics I think she only gained 1/2 lb. She's had no appetite for the past few months and her stools have been sour smelling again and fatty too and she's having 4-6 a day. We went to clinic yesterday and she's at what they consider nutritional risk b/c she went down almost 25% in her weight. Her doc said he won't wait any longer than 2-3 months and if she's not gained any weight he's going to put a feeding tube in. The thing's were changing to see if it makes a difference is instead of taking 15mg of Prevacid 2x/day, I'm giving her 30mg 1x/day 30 minutes before breakfast and she can only eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and something right before bed. She can have absolutely no snacking in between. Well we started this today and this child is eating so much food, I think she's eaten more today than over the past 3-4 days. And she's only had 2 stools today and they've been the most regularly formed, not fatty, not sour smelly I've seen in a long time. So, finally, my question is this, Can changing Prevacid like that in only 1 day have an effect like that or is it more likely just a fluke?

Any advise is welcome

I came over from the adult section....IMHO acid reflux is a huge contributor to weight problems for all of us. I don't know if what you are experiencing is a fluke; but, I'd say keep moving in that direction. I can tell you that in my experience after I started taking Nexium I have gained so much weight that my doc told me yesterday I need to lose about 5 pounds. I started Nexium about 2 years ago and at one point a feeding tube was mentioned to me. I don't know what your little one's eating habits are like from your post; but, if she is feeling full and bloated from acid it is difficult to want to eat more or even a full meal. You may have just tapped into an amount that works for her. Be sure and let her doc know about the change in dose. Just FYI a lot of centers are being very careful to keep an eye on acid reflux and going as far as doing minor surgery to protect the long-term health of little ones lungs. I am NOT suggesting that by any means for your little one but watch their frequency of lung exacerbations and be sure and ask questions of the doc about reflux and it's affect on that You may already know all of this Please keep us posted. I wanted to add in agreement with the post below that enzymes are much more effective with acid control. CF tummy aches are really really uncomfortable and if stools are ugly and bad then tummy aches are probably present. Those tummy aches when I was a kid made me have NO appetite at all.

Right after diagnosis, our experience with Prevacid was that if we missed a dose, the enzymes had no effect and her stools were just like prior to dx and treatment. We NEVER miss a dose anymore! So I say that your change in Prevacid dosage could very well make that much difference. Just my opinion.

I'm also interested in this 3 meals and only 1 snack concept. I understand the reasonings behind it, just never thought about how it could change digestion and eating desires. At our last clinic appointment Katy had no height or weight gain. Nutritional status always seems to be a hovering issue for us as well.

I hope it works out and I wish you and Morgan all the best!

The first day that my son started previcid 30 he ate a ton also. He has still been eating better than he was befor but his pain has came back even though he is also taking zantac. We have a gi apt coming up and we will see where we will go from there. My son also gained the 2 lbs back that he lost prior to starting the previcid. He is not diagnosed with cf yet. Right now we are not even really looking into it with him we are focusing on my daughter who has a lot of lung problems and if she comes up positive then we are going to check him too. I belive that they both have it but I hope I am wrong.
