Prevacid

We started my 3 month old, Mason, on Prevacid about 3 weeks ago. He takes half of 15 mg once a day . Doctors advised us to give on empty stomach at least 15 minutes before eating anything. Well we soon found out that it doesn't agree with his tummy...vomiting soon after eating or sometimes even in the middle of eating. So, we increased the wait time to 30 minutes, still no good. For the last week or so I have been giving it to him 2 hours after a meal, 1 hour before his next feeding. This seems to work. Yesterday however I needed to feed him a little earlier than his next feeding was scheduled, so gave Prevacid about 15-20 minutes early, and fed him about 45 minutes after. Vomit again! Weird thing is (and thankfully) it doesn't seem to phase him much before or after, he doesn't act like his tummy hurts or anything. It must happen so fast...

My question is: Is his tummy that particular that he can only tolerate it within that small window of time? Has anyone else had similar issues with Prevacid? If on a different antacid does it work well?

Thanks!
Hmm...we haven't had that problem with Prevacid, but did with Ranitidine. I'm assuming you're using the solutabs? If so, we've had to give those to our little one in his applesauce with his enzymes. The solutab on his tongue (even when it was crushed up) made him gag (and he's 7 months old) and throw up. Even though we've been giving it to him just before he eats, it has really helped his reflux.

There's also a liquid form that you might ask about from your phamacist. You have to get it every two weeks & it's refrigerated so it can be a bit of a pain, but might be a little easier to take. We started with that, but the volume got to be too much and he started to fight when he had to take it, so we switched to the solutab.

My 11 year old has been on Prevacid and then Nexium for as long as I can remember without that problem. You may want to check the dosage against his weight. This site has a dosage calculator.

My DD threw up everything she ate for most of her first 6 months of life with or without the reflux meds. If you are nursing you may want to keep a food diary. We kept switching meds, changing dosage, etc. and then I kept my own food diary and realized that I had gotten myself on a fairly precise diet and it was what I ate and when I ate it that mattered. If your baby is on formula, then I found that my DD did better with premixed then powder I mixed. It was my timing of when I mixed the formula that mattered. Mom's can get really scheduled and maybe it is another thing in your schedule and not the Prevacid timing. Just a thought. I actaully threw out the baby burping bibs after my first child because I thought it was such as waste. She had such projection that she never hit the bib. Then I had a non-reflux baby and she really did get a "little" spit up on the bib at times. Best wishes. Reflux is no fun.

Thanks for the responses! His is the solutab, and he actually LOVES it...it smells like it may taste like strawberry or cherry?? I'll double check with doctor if the dosage is right. I don't think my diet has anything to do with his vomiting b/c he never vomited like this before starting Prevacid. His vomiting coincided with starting the Prevacid. He didn't have any problem with reflux before, except for a week or 2 when he was just a few weeks old. Doctors said he is probably just on of the few that reacts to it that way (it is one of the side-effects) but I think we will ask about switching to another brand of antacid.
just under 4% of people reported nausea using Prevacid; so while low it is possible.

As for the timing, no it shouldn't be anywhere near the specific, the purpose of the prevacid is to reduce the acid concentration in the stomach prior to emptying into the small bowel as the enzymes in the gut won't work in an acidic environment.

I would definitely give the Dr a call and ask about switching meds, there is no benefit in giving him something to help digestion if it makes him puke before he can

My daughter started on Prevacid (she was seven at the time) and she also threw up each and every time. Her doctor immediately switched her over to Prilosec and she has no issue with that whatsoever -- she's been taking that for over two years now.

It may be a rare side effect, but yes, it does happen...

Thanks so much for the advice...I have a call into the doctor asking about Prilosec. It seems some others have had better luck with this brand too. Fingers crossed!
