Probiotics question

Have any of you found probiotics to be really effective? I talked to my doc about using them, and his reply was that you'd have to ingest a huge amount of them to actually notice any significant benefit. He didn't seem to think it was worth the trouble.

I just got a cereal made by Kashi to try. It is called Vive Probiotic digestive wellness cereal--toasted graham and vanilla. Besides having an awesome 12 grams of fiber, it contains Lactobacillus acidophilus cultures. I thought it might be an easy way for me to get some without having to mess with more pills.

I have seen an improvement. I used to have a cronically itchy crotch. I've never had a full blown yeast infection just itching. Now that I am on probiotics I don't have this at all or fissures in my vaginal and anus area. I can only imagine that it is helping my GI system as well. Then 2 weeks ago dramamama (Mandy) posted those studies about probiotics helping lung problems so I'm definitely on the probiotic band wagon for life.

In terms of the doctor recommending them. I will say that my doctor is not very Pro supplements. I take a lot of different things all of which he doesn't think is helpful. Probiotics on the other hand, he says I should be on. He recommends that if you are on antibiotics to take a probiotic. Since most of us are on Zithro all the time that means to me that most of us should be on probiotics all the time.

Now I'll tell you a scary story in case you aren't already convinced. This will likely make you want to have them at the very least while on IVs. I do a fundraiser at Christmas time at Borders book store wrapping gifts for cf donations. A volunteer showed up to help me with a picture of her beautiful daughter who died in '99 at age 17. She was 80% FEV1. She went in for a "tune up" and caught C-diff and was dead 2 weeks later. This mother preached probiotics to me like crazy. She said if the doctors had only be smart enough to put her daughter on a probiotic while she was on these hard hitting IV anti's her body wouldn't have gotten C-diff in the first place or would have been able to combat it if she had gotten it. She was left with no good bacteria in her system.

WOW Lauren! That's is indeed a very scary story. Especially in light of what our spring has been like.

I insisted that we put Emily on a probiotic after the 3rd or 4th time that she cultured c.diff this spring. I couldn't beleive that I had to talk our cf team into it! She's been on for about a month. During that month she did a short course of bactrim for an ear infection and topical antibiotics (ear drops, eye drops) for drainage and pink eye.

I have to say that aside from the pink eye and goopy ear, she seems healthier than she has in quiite a while. Bactrim usually screws her up in terms of appetite, poops and general mood. This time, you couldn't tell she was on it!

We will do a stool sample in about 2 weeks to check for c.diff (unless we start to see symptoms sooner, which we haven't so far). I guess that will be the proof in the pudding (or, in the poop, as it were.).

By the way, the wonderful pharmacist at Children's in Milwaukee suggested we put her on an over the counter probiotic called Floragen3. It has 15 million active live cultures per capsule (acidophilus, lactobacilius and something esle, I think...) ans she takes one a day. It's is reasonably priced and easy to find.

So far, I am definately ON the Probiotics Bandwagon!
