probiotics

A few friends have mentioned probiotics and if Jack was on them, or could take them. We go to clinic on Aug 7 I'm going to talk Jack's GI doc about probiotics and if they would be beneficial for Jack.
After getting Rotavirus the end of May Jack ended up with diarrhea almost the entire month of June and at the end of June was finally diagnosed with C-DIFF. He was put on Flagyl but had to be switched to Vanco to get rid of it.
I was hoping that if someone here was taking probiotics or had any information about them that they would share.
Thanks,
Carey

When we were (finally) post-c.diff I made the decision to put Emily on an over-the-counter pro-biotic. The cf doc and nurse and dietician all shrugged and said, "Probably won't help, probably won't hurt." Everything I had read here, and common sense told be that we had more to gain than not gain. So, we found Florajen. It's relatively inexpesive, easy to find (GNC, Walgreens)and easy to administer (Emily currently likes to open the capsule, pour out the powder, lick her finger and stick it in...like a Lick'n stick).

Since she started on it, her stools have normalized, she seems less gassy and most importatnly, NO MORE C.DIFF!!!!!

I 'd reccommend some type of pro-biotic for anyone who used anti-biotics. But, that's just my opinion.

Let us know what your docs say. I'm curious, based on the reaction I got.

antibiotics kill the bad stuff AND the good stuff in our bodies, so i always make it a priority to replace the good stuff.

Probiotics can have a major affect. It depends on the patient, but as we all know abx kill everything (especially broad-spectrum such as cipro).

There are a ton of options. If you look at the bottles, some have 1-2-10 different strands of bacteria. Normally, the more strains the better as you are getting closer to 'natural' condition in the gut.
