Probiotics

We just went to clinic yesterday and our nutritionist seems very excited about this specific probiotic. She said at the CF conference they gave a class on probiotics. They are saying that they are finding that lactobacillis gg is the specific probiotic that seems to really be making a difference in the cf tummies. The recommendation is to take just one strain of probiotic. Most probiotics have at least 4 different bacteria in them and that they can fight against each other and not have any effect at all.
So......it seems that at this point the research is pointing to just taking lactobacillis gg. The nutritionist said that Culturelle is the one to use and that both boys can take one capsule (10 billion organisms)safely. If they cannot swallow pills, the powder can be emptied into food.
The one thing she made clear, is that we must wash our hands well after administering the capsule, as it is a bacteria and while it is great for the intestines you still have to be careful otherwise.
Please, any feedback or comments are welcome.

Blessings,
Missa

Thanks for sharing that, I am going to ask about it next week at clinic. My daughter age 5wcf has been taking culturelle but also takes another probitoic with alot of different strains. I do notice more tummy trouble when I take her off the multi-strain though. Anyway, thanks for sharing now I know to look into this further!

Interesting. My boys take a probiotic too which is lactobacillus acidophilus and calcium. I'm really curious about the Culturelle and why its different. Where do you get it? Is it a presciption?

Thanks

You can get Culturelle at Walgreens & Walmart, about anywhere else like those places I imagine. I used to have a good document (year or 2 old) on why it is good for CFers but it is on my other computer that DH took to his office to "fix" so hopefully someone else knows what I am talking about and can share it here.
