pseudomonas and staph

I got a phone call this morning with not very good news. Hadley was seen at CF clinic last week for her 3mo checkup and yearly lab. They had recieved the throat cultures back and said that she cultured pseudomonas and staph! This is the first time that she has cultured these and it is scary to me. They are starting her on Tobi inhaled, and Cipro. Are these the normal meds for this?
Also, she will be 2 in June and has really been fighting me lately with the Hyper-sal in her nebulizer. She doesn't want to wear the mask and I can't get her to leave it on. I just hold it up to her face, and the RT's said that would be fine, but what about for the Tobi? Any suggestions on how to get a child this age to keep the mask on?
She also had a high fever and slight (they thought viral) pneumonia about a month ago. She took a oral antibiotic for that and was much better about 24hrs after starting the antibiotic. Now I am wondering if culturing these could be related to the pneumonia?
I appreciate everyone's support and knowledge on this site. I know that I don't post much, but I read on here almost everyday, and this website keeps me going knowing there are other's out there like us!
Thanks again!
Andrea

Holding the mask up to her face should be fine, you just don't want to hold it in front of her face and have it blow into the face and air and waste medicine. Until DS was older, we pretty much sat with him during tobi and watched cartoons while he nebbed his tobi.

The pneumonia could've just set up the opportunity/environment for the pseudo and staph to grow. Or it could've been there all along. You can drive yourself nuts trying to figure out how and why they culture something. It's just one of those things that if they get a cold or a cough it's important to be proactive in treatment -- increase CPT, so as to not let the mucus stagnate. Sounds like your clinic is being proactive with regards to the tobi and cipro.

Your situation sounds a lot like ours. Our daughter will be 2 in August (can't believe how fast it goes!) and cultured positive for pseudomonas and staph around 17 months. We did a month of the same meds & had the same difficulty (as well as hyper sal). Because the TOBI is so ridiculously expensive ($5000/month if we hadn't had insurance) and incredibly important, I knew we had to find a way to make the neb sessions go better. I ended up giving her a sucker and it worked like a charm! =) Don't tell the dentist, haha! We just made sure to brush her teeth afterwards and have her rinse with water too. But, it helped us go from absolutely hating treatments to having her run to the cupboard where things are kept and point multiple times a day! We did suckers for a few days then switched to pieces of a fruit roll up, then blueberries for a few days, then bananas (yes, it was like weaning someone off a drug!). Now, as long as the Doodlebops are on, she'll even sit by herself and hold the neb! Although, 90 percent of the time we have her in our lap through the vest & nebs. I hope this helps! I could go on & on but don't want to ramble! =)

Thanks so much for the encouraging replies! We finally got the Tobi on Wed. after waiting for a prior auth from insurance. But glad we got that! YIKES! That stuff is expensive! I had no idea! Hadley has been doing great with the treatments. I even got her to wear the mask!!!! This is huge for us because she has never worn it before! We bought her a couple Mikey Mouse movies and they seem to do the trick. She gets a little aggitated at the end.....seems to take us 35-40min for the Tobi! Should it take that long? I thought that they told us 15-20min? I could be wrong though, cause I feel overloaded with new meds and info! But so far, so good! Thanks again!
