Pseudomonas smell

Hey-

I have one other question- Does anyone here have a pseudomonas infection that makes their breath smell? My boyfriend has for a little while now, and it's at the point where he is self-conscious to go out and talk to people. Does this mean he has a certain type of pseudomonas infection- if there are different types?

Thanks!

I sometimes think the smell is from mucus in the back of my throat that I can't swallow, but I don't feel the need to cough either (hope this makes sense).
It's frustrating & common. I just brush, scrape my tongue & floss a lot and ALWAYS carry gum/mints and just pray that it's covering it up.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0">

I can actually tell alot of times when any of my children are sick because of their breath. Kait's does seem to get really bad when she is sick, my friend has also told me that her childrens breath will get bad, she calls it sick breath.

I remmeber once I had such a bad infection I actually almost died, whenever I coughed I could taste the infection. I almost threw up everytime I coughed it was so bad. Now I don't really notice a bad taste or have bad breath (I hope) but usually when I have an infection my nose smells really bad. I have to use my nose spray all the time just to hide the smell.

If you use a spit cup to expectorate, give it a little whiff sometime. If you are a person who cultures pseudomonas regularly, you may notice a semi-sweet smell that is a little sickening. That's what I consider pseudomonas smell, and if I am feeling worse I can sometimes smell it on my breath. But no one except my mom has ever noticed it.

bubbalove, there is a sweet/semi-sweet smell associated with pseudomonas and a lot of times you will be able to tell it in your boyfriend before he will even be due for a sputum cluture. This same thing happens with my husband and when I can smell it (usually only when I am very close to him), I recommend to him that he should call the doc and request a sputum culture. He does just that and it' has been pseudomonas every time so far. In the 5+ years that we have been together, I have just gotten use to it and it never really offended me, but I could tell that it was there.

If/when you smell it, I would recommend, that you recommend to him to have a culture done ASAP so it can be treated. Since he gets self conscious about it, you may want to inform him that it's not something everybody around him can smell and notice and that unless he is kissing and cuddling with his friends, they won't be able to tell.

Hey-

The thing is that people can smell it.. It's not just when he is up close and personal with someone (like when we cuddle)- I actually have blocked airways so I usually CANT smell it, and other people say things when I dont even notice it. He was diagnosed with sinusitis a few weeks ago- do you think it may be that?? His Dr. told him it was the pseudomonas, but I find it really interesting that nobody else has this problem.. it is a very potent smell though (and he does have good hygeine). I think I am going to talk to his Dr. about this again.

Is it just when he is culturing pseudomonas or is it all the time? I would definately recommend that he have a culture done ASAP and follow the protocol the doctor gives him.

I'd have to say its been all the time for the past year almost. Sometimes it's worst than other times.. and he says he can taste it a lot when he lies down I guess.

I have the very same thing. Almost all the time I have a bad taste/smell. I go to the dentist regularly, but wonder if it could be a combo of things, infection & maybe bacteria in my mouth too??

The pseudomonas spell is very specific one - once you recognize it, it's very distinguishable from the others. good luck!

I have that problem. Maybe not so bad....I did alot in high school when I was sick more often with sinusitus and lung infections. My mouth even tasted bad all the time and i thought people could smell my breath so i chewed gum alot...i got so good at it teachers couldnt tell. I now know that when the smell gets worse or more noticable for ME that i might have a sinus infection (along with other symptoms). I say sinus problems because mine get so clogged up that it just sits up there and i get bad smells all the time no one else can smell, so its in my head literally. When I am sick either with sinuses or a lung infection my husband and some family members have said (when asked) that it seems like my breath is more noticeable...My husband just flat out says your breath smells (he doesnt worry about hurtin mmy feelings lol jk). Also I am having sinus problems right now and have been coughing alot, i have a bed side trash can instead of a spit cup...when i emptied it man it stank BAD and it had only been there a day or two because i change the trash bag often. It almost smelled as if a cat peed in it. Soooo gross. ANyway he isnt the only one with problem smells. I dont know if is is the pseudo but it is very possible, but any infection and get smelly.

Well I was talking to my best friend (who doesn't have CF), about this, and she is studying to be a nurse. She said pseudomonas does in fact have a distinct smell --- she said there was a story about a guy who had a pseudomonas infection on his foot (don't ask me, this is the first I ever heard of this, and I didn't get details) and the smell was awful.

But anyway, I can totally smell it and taste it when i have an exacerbation! (ps I culture pseudomonas)

It also tends to get a slightly different color and/or texture when you're actively growing crap. But yeah I notice the color/texture/smell differences when I'm growing this or that.
