ok, long story short (or as short as possible)....my daughter was pretty sick 2 weeks ago and was put on oral prednisone for one week (then taken off) and pulmicort .5mg/2ml 2x daily ongoing thru winter. in the past week and a half since she has recovered she has turned into a little monster!!! she previosly would always go to sleep and sleep thru the night....now, she will go to bed, but scream and yell and cry then wake up several times throughout the night and not go back to sleep for an hour or more. during the day she cannot stop..her energy has tripled, its crazy!!! she has developed a nasty quick temper, throwing HUGE fits, kicking things, throwing things, etc.... (i have no idea where this behavior is coming from...we dont even have tv for her to see it there and i have never acted like this)...so, i read the pulmicort side effects and they say nothing of these things, but i am at a loss, this seems way more serious than the average "almost" 3 yr old issues. its like her personality has changed overnight and i am wondering if anyone has experienced the same thing?????? do i need to take her off the pulmicort or get an exorcist?? (just kidding of course)

Pulmicort is a steroid, it is very possible this could be a side effect. Call your doctor or pharmacist to see what can be done to help her cope with the irritated feeling.

Its not the pulmicort, its the prednisone. Have you ever been on that stuff? Oh my gosh, its awful -- like the worst PMS you've ever had. Emotional upheaval, blood sugars all over the place, crazy appetite and energy. If she's been off of it for a week, it should be getting out of her system -- the effects do last for awhile past the days of treatment.

I feel you, my son has horrible allergies and ALWAYS needs a week of prednisone every spring. I always dread it because he immediately turns into the child from hell for 2-3 weeks. I have some stories about his meltdowns during these times that my witnesses (er friends) still talk about in absolute awe since it is so atypical from his personality.

Hang in there, I hope these side effects are gone SOON!!!

Prednisone turns Emily into a raging, miserable insomniac. Pulmacort also, when she started it, had a mildly agitating effect on her no matter what the side effect profile said... we saw a change when we switched from her usual Flovent to her sick plan Pulmacort the first several times.

However, right now, my bet is on the Prednisone. Hopefully she will be better soon.

My daughter can't take pulmicort. We were assured there were only mild side effects (she can't take antihistimines either, so I always worry about side effects.) By the end of day one, my daughter was raging. She screamed and slammed doors, she yelled that she wished I was dead and later screamed she wished she was dead. I read through all the literature from the pharmacist, but there was nothing listed that remotely sounded like what I was seeing.

By the end of day two, my daughter leaped off her swing and did a mid-air sommersault -- and scared me to death. I decided she was coming off pulmicort immediately. I also began searching for more information about side effects and found a site called askapatient.com. Some of the ratings were very positive, but there were plenty of people who had the same reactions that I was witnessing.

My daughter has never been on prednisone so I can tell you from experience that pulmicort can most definitely bring on that type of behavior. It may be extremely rare, I don't know, but it is very real.

I'm SO glad that clinic acknowledged that this can happen. It's SO frustrating when something is so obvious to us (i.e. our child is throwing tantrums and not sleeping or oh my screaming to die and doing flips off the swing...) and they are completely ignoring a connection. We were fortunate in that it was a mild response that went away, but it was obvious because her going on the med was repetitive (every time she got congested we switched) so it was a 'reproducible' effect and obvious to both by dh and I by day 2/3.

If it turns out she really needs an inhaled steroid to help keep her off Prednisone in future, you may want to consider asking about Flovent. Emily did NOT have this side effect at all with this one, and it comes in a couple different strengths. Inhalers come with spacers as well as mask adapters so even babies/toddlers can use them.
