Has anyone had or heard of pulmonary embolism(sp) or synthetic clot? I recieved an email from my uncle that my cousin is in the hospital with an ruptured artery in his lung. i would feel better if i knew something about it.

Do you mean Pulmonary embolization? An embolism is a blood clot. An embolization is where they embolize( cauterize) a blood vessel to stop it from bleeding.

i think. i'm just repeating what the email said. i'm wondering what kind of damage it causes? my uncle also said that when he recovers they will be on the transplant list.

I had a pulmonary embolization 3 years ago. And to this day I am fine and don't require a lung transplant. An embolization is an evasive procedure, but it doesn't mean that your health is on a decline. The reason for my embolization is because I had repeat infections in the same area in my lungs, which caused one of my main viens in my lungs to open up. The doc described it has a coroded vien - like acid had eaten at it. I was coughing up quite an amount of blood for a few months. What they did, is the docs made a small insition in my groin, and went into a main artery with a little camera to find the bleeder and "burn" it close. To this day I haven't had anymore problems.

Oh I feel better too just knowing I am not alone. You give me hope that all will be better now.!
I just got out of the hospital after having 3 bleeders embolized! My doc thinks list will fix me now. I had 3 prior episodes of bleeding that they did not know where they were coming from. Finally had an angiogram, and they clogged up 3 of my 4 bleeders. Now got to regain my strength, get my blood sugars under control and recooperate from the resulting anemia.

My husband has had several embolizations (7 to be exact) and he is fine. There are risks associated with them, but he went through all of the procedures without a problem. From moving across the country we have found that different clinics/hospitals deal with hemopystis quite differently (with some doing embolizations pretty regularly and others not wanting to do them except in very rare circumstances).

it's a pretty straight forward intervention that helps the patient avoid extreme blood loss. if the person only has a small amount of nuisense blood coming up they don't like to intervene at most clinics as there is risk with any doctor or technician intruding on the lungs or any part of the body for that manner. I am a regular bleeder since age 12 never requiring an embolization. My doctor has 5 criteria in which he embolizes. I have not met any of the 5. The two biggest risks to me with embolization are:

1) paralyzation. closing off a vessel that goes from lung to spine could result in this. they don't always know for sure which are which. the important one's can be very small and seemingly not that important.

2) closing off blood supply to an area of the lung albeit a small area kills that area of the lung.

I prefer to put off this surgery until absolutely necessary in hopes of advancement in the procedure. There has been marked improvement in the procedure in the last 5 years alone.

Just an FYI, this was the easiest procedure I ever had done. They give you Versid, an amnesia type sedative., you dont feel a thing but can respond to questions if they need you to. I have no incision, just a tiny spot on my groin like I had my blood drawn there. In fact I have had bigger spots from having my blood drawn. It was worth it.

Mare...... I just wanted to let you know that without the Versed, you would not be saying it was easy and painless.... LOL
You are one of the smart ones who agreed to the sedation, i am the idiot that had all 3 done without anything. I am one of those wacko people who wants to know whats going on at all times, Plus i HATE the feeling sedation gives me, and just HAD to be awake and aware....lol It is not easy and painless by any means without sedation....yikes <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0">
