Question about donating blood

I haven't tried to donate blood since high school so things might have changed, but at the time I couldn't give blood because CF was considered an "endocrine disorder" because of the pancreatic involvement. Obviously a bit of bad information there. My doctor at the time said that the rule was "the stupidest thing ever." At least I can feel guilt-free about avoiding the huge needles whenever a blood drive comes up

You can definitely give blood at some Red Cross centers. Check out this list of eligibility from the NY Blood Center. Keep in mind that different states will have different guidelines, but if you scroll down to CF on this list it says we are accepted as donors if evaluated by a medical professional and if not currently being treated for an active infection.

PS: If your state does disqualify you, please don't lie. We may not agree with their reasons, it may be stupid, but those regulations are in place for public safety. You wouldn't want someone lying about one of the other criteria, and people receiving blood deserve it to be compliant with all medically approved guidelines. As patients we probably know that better than anyone.

interesting. i tried to give blood once in h.s. but they said i didn't weight enough for my height. as far as the cf, they said that didn't matter. i suppose its different wherever you go and what exactly you're donating (plasma, blood, etc.) i agree though to be honest when answering blood donation questions.... they are in place to protect you AND the public. good for you for wanting to donate though!!!

I think there may be issues with some meds -- I've been at the blood bank when they've had to look up a medication to see if it's okay for the person to give. Sometimes, depending upon what it is, they're okay -- othertimes it's not or they have to do a little something different with the blood if the person has had ibuprofen or aspirin within a few days of giving.
