Question about Enzymes when sick

Kaiden doesnt have CF, but figured I would stick around since this is the only place i can get info on pancreatic insufficiency.

When Kaiden gets sick, even just a cold, he ends up getting diahrea with undigested food and it stinks!! just like before we started the pancrease. and it lasts about a month, then evens back out again.

He is sick again, and his poop has gone back to diahrea, so i called his GI Dr. and asked about what to do, and he said that is really unusual for his CF patients to do that when sick??

When your little guys are sick, do they usually need more enzymes than when they are healthy?

He said to double his enzymes for 2-3 days, if that doesnt work, use lactobacillus for 2-3 days, and if that doesnt work, more tests.

To me it makes sense that when they are sick they would need more help with digestion.

would really love your input, thanks!

Occasionally when Vinny is sick or on meds he will get diarrhea, but I've never given him extra enzymes for it. With him it isn't greasy, fatty like he needs another enzyme, it's more watery, runny. Sorry for the visuals, TMI!

As for getting enzymes into them when they're fighting, I say put it in whatever works! I've seen people say they've used ketchup, maple syrup, pudding, anything they'll take it in. In my house we still use baby food mixed fruit and Vinny's over 2 years old. Whatever makes it so you don't have to fight, it's all going to the same place anyways, right?

We always notice a change in stools with a cold. If it doesn't persist I don't change his enzymes but I always up his probiotic. I recommend a daily probiotic then you just add a little more when they are ill. I believe as long as the food you mix enzymes in is acidic your good to go. I resorted to jelly and dark chocolate syrup in a pinch, but pear and apple sauce is our main way.

You are welcome to hang with us anytime!! :)

Just curious, do they have any reasons for his pancreatic insufficiency? Is it a biological malfunction, something he'll out grow? Glad to hear it isn't CF!!
