question about pseudomonas

If this helps at all, I've had pseudomonas (PA) since I was 7 years old and I'm guessing there are many others here that have had it for years & are still alive too.

It's kind of hard for CFs to avoid PA, as it is every where. When I was younger, they only treated it when they felt it was "flaring up". Now days they take a much more active approach to battling PA, trying to catch it right away.

Alyssa, they checked it for a second time although it showed pseudo, because they said it may have showed pseudo due to my brother's being at hospital for 15 days(he was at hospital for other reason)so as he had never pseudo they wanted to check again.

Do they think maybe the culture was cross-contaminated and he really doesn't have pseudo? (He only cultured it in the hospital, right?) Then the second time was negative for pseudo, but psitive for mycobacterium, so now they're going to do a third culture to see if it grows pseudo?

He could culture negative even if he has it, he may have just spit that sputum out from a different part of the lungs than where the pseudo is. Doctors here usually want 3 cultures without pseudo before they'll say it is gone. But if he is still having a flare up and culturing mycobacterium, he probably needs medicine anyway. I think even if he does culture pseudo next time, he still probably has a good chance of getting rid of it. I think it takes a while to really colonize. My son got it at 6 months old, did 3 weeks of inhaled tobi with the nebulizer and oral cipro, and has not cultured it since (it's been a year and a half since then).

I must add that I think it's so great how involved you are with your brother's medical care, and how you're learning so much about CF. I hope everything comes back negative and your brother is feeling better.

Amber682, thanks for the encouraging post.I don't know what they probably think. It may have showed pseudo due to hospital having the germ and he may not really have it?or they want to see if it finally growed so they checked again? We will see..It is really great to learn so many things from all of you here, and i am greatfull for this!i am involved with my brother's meds, but i give him anxiety too, through involvement.

take care...

First let me say you sound like a good carng sister to your brother !<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

And next I have had HEAVY pseudo in my lungs for 4 yrs and to be honest I was a teenager at the time and I didnt do my nebulizers religiously .....

Then I did my neb for a good solid month every day !
My psedo went down to moderate .....

Now I am rid of pseudo for the past yr and docs areletting me go off the colistin!

So ppl might say its hard to get rid of it but with a little dilligence ........ you know the rest ! ! !

Good luck

I also agree with Lynda. I have had psuedo since I was 8 and have been alive and kicking the whole time. It is kind of inevitable that many people get it and if you do your meds it can be easier to live with. Good luck!
