Question about Tune ups

Well we went to Lexi's CF check up today. Her pulmonary function test was 92%. I told them that her cough is still not baseline and they agreed. She still had some congestion they could hear in her lungs, had some fluid behind her ear, and a sinus infection. I asked about the tune up thing and our doctor is not for them unless fev1 drops. She said in her experience scheduled tune ups have not helped that much. She wants to see what her cultures show and put her on 6 weeks of Septra. She thinks the 10 day rounds that we have done on several occasions throughout the last few months just are not knocking out what is going on in there!

I feel good about this! I think!?

92% is great. I went back and reread your post and saw that your daughter did well when she took prednisone. That is because prednisone is a cortisone that reduces inflammation in the lungs, in other words prednisone is used as an asthma medicine that opens the airways. I take inhaled cortisone -- at the moment Asmanex. My doctor aways says she doesn't get why doctor prescribe a bronchodilator without an inhaled steroid. The bronchodilator only opens the lungs, but does nothing to reduce the inflammation. The same thing happens in the sinuses, the same triggers that cause the tissue in the lung to swell cause the tissue in the sinuses to swell too, causing possible sinus infections.

You seem happy with the treatment plan, so that's good. I just thought I'd mention these things in case she takes the Septra and you end up back in the same place. At least you'll know there are some things you can do, instead of feeling disappointed.

I have a great amount of respect for everyone on this forum! There are not many people you can count on to understand CF.

I also realize we are all very different in our choices and techniques. Which in a way is nice because we can help eachother understand others point of views and possibly learn from one another.

With that said. My daugter like yours has also cultured PA and still cultures MRSA. Her first PA culture was Nov. 2007. The doc sent us straight to the hospital for a bronch and two weeks worth of home IV's. By Jan. of 2008 her PA was gone and still is today. Yeah!!

This bronch and IV method worked for her. I realize it doesn't for everyone.

I can't tell you what is best for your daughter I can just share with you what worked for mine and wish you the best.

You are already on the right track by asking what else is out there and making your own choice.

Good luck and I hope you have good results whatever treatments you choose.
