question about veins

hey guys,

for those of you who do NOT have ports, i was curious your thoughts on this subject: do you go into the hospital and get started on antibiotics with a peripheral IV when you know you might not be able to get a picc in for a couple or few days?

i ask because the CF clinic day at UNC is thurdays--which means if you are admitted thursday, you may or may not be able to get a PICC before the weekend. (i go to vascular radiology--only the best, baby!--and they don't do procedures on weekends unless it is an emergency.) this timing sucks because the older i get, or maybe it is just the meds i'm on now, the less well i tolerate antibiotics through peripherals. and i know not only are the meds hurting, they are also probably doing some damage to my veins!

does it make sense to postpone starting on antibiotics a couple of days to save your veins from all the pricks and irritation? when you leave the hospital all banged up like that, and then face two weeks of home nurses doing tobra draws, (these nurses are not the best i've found) it's just miserable!

thoughts??

Last time they told me that can't have to do a peripheral if they can't get me in in for a PICC before 11:00, somthing about if they can't get it get's stuck and I have to go to radiology finish. Then they look at my veins and do it anyway. Apparently I have very good veins.

Hey laura, I had to have my port removed, because i developed a dvt (clot) so i am back to picc lines, I guess if you think you can wait and the drs. are ok w/ that, then i'd wait.. why put yourself through more torture than you have to... Let us know what you decide to do... joni

Before I had my port, I went through the same thing Laura. It's actually why I decided to get a port. I would have to go to Interventional Radiology to have my PICC placed (which I'm guessing is the same as vascular radiology in your hospital), but it would sometimes take a few days to get in there. In the meantime, I'd have to use peripheral IVs which always blew...they lasted a whole day at most, and were very painful. As a result, now, I only have ONE vein that actually works for blood draws (kind of a pain during GTT tests ).

At any rate, if I was sick enough to have to be admitted, the docs usually did NOT want to wait until I could get a PICC placed to start IVs. So as Joni says, if the docs think you can wait, it's probably better for your veins to wait. But in my experience, they don't usually think you can wait.

Have they (or anyone else for that matter) suggested getting a port yet? Do you have strong feelings about NOT getting one? I only ask because I really really did not want a port and now that I have one, I'm mad at myself for waiting so long. It's not for everyone, so I'm definitely not trying to push that on you. Just for me, it's probably the best CF-related decision I ever made (and one of the hardest to make, haha).
