Question for Amy

The representative from Respirtech who is a respiratory therapist visited us last week to train us on my son's vest. He described this technique. He said that air is trapped deep in the lungs. That is why the average person takes a deep breathe every few hours - they need to clear this air deep in their lungs. I think this technique that you all are describing clears the mucus in this area.

it is like you are filling up a balloon and keeping it inflated and slowly letting the air out.

I think this technique is good but If you can I would try and exhale extremely slowly creating less pressure and the air comes out slowly and that will really make you bring it up like mad.

That is what I did with the tube back pressure on inhaling and exhaling. when I did the exhaling slowly that is when I brought up some stuff and my pfts went up afterward. You would think after coughing hard your pfts would come down because you are tired but with me they went up. I was just paranoid because I had a cold at the time.

When I am driving or just not doing anything I take a breath in and hold. But when I inhale I am not inhaling with my mouth open. I am just using whatever air is in my lungs at the time. I am utilizing my capacity on a normal breath instead of a big breath.

when I do my technique I think I might be creating too much pressure so I am going to ask my doctor to watch me.

When I was a kid many of my friends would inhale helium and talk like they were a gerblet sounding all high pitched. lol well it is like that inhaling tiny breaths and holding it in and you actually feel like you are using all the muscles that surround your lungs. Very weird feeling.

coughing is bad, huffing up the oysters is very good, the less coughing the better as coughing causes your airways to eventually collapse so you end up sort of like someone with bronchietasis. coughing causes rapid expansion then collapsing of the airways, over years the old airways shite themselves. my beliefs anyhow!!
hows that gridiron team of yous doing Amy? bzzt Blacky

This technique seems to be working for me. I think I've may have it down. I'm coughing up some nasty stuff. Been bringing stuff up all morning and am actually getting tired of it. For me the key has been avoiding the deep breath. At first I was not letting enough air out and I was filling up to fast. It has to be done much slower and remember normal breaths. Deep breaths seem to push the stuff back down.

Here's what it feels like for me: After a few minutes of the technique, I start hearing a bubbling and crackling sound moving up in my lungs. I gets higher and higher until I know I can cough it out with ease. Hopefully this continues to work. I have so many issues with the vest not clearing me out.
