Question for Julie...

Mark Iv's at home aren't so bad. I am doing them right now as I type this. I was in the hosp in 03, and before that in the early 90's. I just was put in the hosp last 3 weeks ago for pneumonia that kicked my but. If you need IV meds at home, see if there is a home health care company that uses the intermate bottles for IV's. You don't have to be hooked up to a machine. They look like baby bottles with a balloon inside them, where the meds are. You can hook them up to your pic line and let them drip in (they don't have to hang, they are pressurized fromt he balloon). Not sure if anyone else uses them on here but this is my second time using them and they are great if you have to do home IV's. I do them at work to. I just stick the bottle in my pocket. Good luck with everything.

That would be highly illegal and unethical to even consider that a hospital would give a mothers breast milk to another child....

I know in other countries maybe, not here though.

Auntie,

I could sell it on the black market but I wouldn't. Surprisingly many many breast milk banks do exist. They test/screen in the same way that they do for blood. There are breastmilk banks that will pay you for your donation and others that will just take it with no repayment to you.

I'm surprised you'd say it's illegal.

Quite a number of triplet moms on my triplet website have been recipients of such donated breastmilk (which is SOOO pricey) for their preemies. Some ins. companies even pay for it because of the proven benefits of breastmilk to preemies.

And wet nurses still exist and I've never heard of it being illega.

Hannah, I would consider it because lord knows we do need the $$$, but I'm going to save what I have stockpiled (I'd say about 2 months worth of exclusive EBM) and spread it out over the next few months using 1/2 formula 1/2 EBM so the babies still get my antibodies.

But once its screened like blood is like Julie said then yes they would like that breast milk. Well not directly from the boob, but you get the idea. I am sure there are statewide regulations that vary also even with the breast milk banks becoming more popular.

Julie, you and Mark are such good parents, juggling three babies and cf, and you are working. Don't be hard on yourself, you are making a good choice. Mark's health is important, and yes the babies get great benefits from breastmilk, but it's not the most important priority in your household--Mark's health is. Kids have been fed formula for years and are healthy. Don't sweat it--and this is from a mom who breast fed untill my kids were 14 months old. I am a strong advocate of breast feeding, but sometimes it is not the best thing. Mark is experiencing what every young "mother" of babies has--sleep deprivation, and exhaustion. So you are making the right choice. It just is hard for a mother to give up--it is so special, one of the things we were created for. I know what you are going through, and there are others here too, we all support you.

I hope Mark is feeling better, I'm so glad that someone brought this up, I had forgotten--I'm sorry. Good luck on what he decides to do-IV's at home or hospital. There are plenty people here that do them at home--less chance of catching an infection from nasty hospital germs which are everywhere.
