Question for those on Preventative Antibioitics

I think I may ask my doctor about trying this.....for the past few years it seems like I start having a cough, and it is very irritating, coughing up more gunk, etc. However-it's not like I am having a totally full blown lung infection. I start on doxy, and after 3-4 days I feel pretty much back to normal. I am already on pulmozyme, advair, and hypertonic saline for preventative meds.

I am feeling that if I were to go on preventative antibioitics that it might help this. What is the med you guys are on-is it zithromax every other day? And how do you like it? Do you feel like it has helped you? Has it made your body more resistant to other antibiotics?? I hate the idea of being on antibioitics all of the time...but I am pretty much on doxy for 2 weeks, off for a week-2 weeks, then back on...its a pattern!

I am allergic to sulfa and pennecilin, so those are both out.

Thanks!

I do zithromax, I take 250mg every day. I also do Cayston every other month (used to do Tobi, but dr just wanted to change things up for a while). I think both of them help tremendously. Zithromax seems to give me more energy and a bigger appetite. And I am always healthier and feel better on my "on" months, whether it be Tobi or Cayston.

I'm in a study for adult's with CF and I take Bactrim DS every day (2x). I do have azithromicin (Z pak/ zithromanx) in my cabinet so that when/if I feel like I'm getting sick I can just imediately start taking it.

I had a horrible cough before I was dx at 21. They put me on bactrim ds (My clinic it the NIH) and I have been taking in with small breaks dince then. I'm 33 and I feel that it has really helped me, and many say that you can build up a resistance but I myself have not had that happen yet.

Good luck, I hope you and your doctor can figure something out!

As far as I know, the effectiveness of preventative antibiotics depends on what you culture. I'm on zithro 3x/wk and tobi every other month and (knock on wood!) I am not colonized with pseudo (I grow it from time to time, but can kill it off with a course of cipro). My doc says that there are better preventative antibiotics for pseudo (both to prevent infection and to keep the numbers down once you are infected) than for staph, which of course I've been colonized with for forever. My infectious disease doc has been pushing starting minocycline to try to keep it at bay, but there isn't much evidence beyond that it should theoretically work. I might try it out anyway, though.

Eww bactim lol. Ive done minocycline, not too bad side effects for me. Zithro is stopped if you have any sort of ntm, non tb bugs, b/c its often used to treat that and they like to keep it in their pocket and not chance resistance. When i was on zithro i was resistant but its used as an anti inflammatory even if resistant. I dont do zithro bc of my M.A. But is it bactrim or biaxin thats like an amped up version of zithro, i think biaxin...

Yes, Biaxin is in the same class as Zithromax. They are both macrolides. Bactrim is a sulfonamide.

Emily takes Zithromax 250mg M/W/F but as an anti-inflammatory. She doesn't culture anything like myco where it would be useful as an antibiotic so at this point anyway we aren't worried about resistance.

Thanks for all of the info! I can't take bactrim as I am allergic to Sulfa.

Zithromax was the one I was thinking of.....I was put on Biaxin last year and I couldn't tolerate it (not allergic-just couldn't tolerate it) - I wonder if I could tolerate zithro? I would think I would be able to....right?

I am thinking a big part of my issue is the inflammation-I am going to bring this up to my doctor about taking the zitrho MWF and see what he thinks. I mainly culture just staph-I have cultured Pseudo twice before, once 9 years ago and once about 7 years ago - but not since then. About 2 years ago I cultured steno malt.

Thanks!
