Thanks for all of the info! I can't take bactrim as I am allergic to Sulfa.

Zithromax was the one I was thinking of.....I was put on Biaxin last year and I couldn't tolerate it (not allergic-just couldn't tolerate it) - I wonder if I could tolerate zithro? I would think I would be able to....right?

I am thinking a big part of my issue is the inflammation-I am going to bring this up to my doctor about taking the zitrho MWF and see what he thinks. I mainly culture just staph-I have cultured Pseudo twice before, once 9 years ago and once about 7 years ago - but not since then. About 2 years ago I cultured steno malt.

Thanks!

I have done the Zithromax 500mg every M/W/F for over 6 years now and I think it does help with my inflammation. I only wheeze when I catch a cold really. I would give it a try.

Hey Marci,

I have been on MWF Zithro for the past 2 years or so. I was taking the high-does Motrin for inflammation (but had to stop it due to stomach issues), so my MD mentioned the Zithro. It is supposed to help with inflammation as well. I definitely think it's helped me. I don't notice a huge difference, but I think it helps.

The other thing you might want to start to consider, since you seem to have a hard time being off inhaled antibiotics, is doing the cycle of either Tobi or Cayston. I have been on Tobi/tobra for the past 16 years and I really believe it's what has kept me so healthy for so long. Now that Cayston is out, I am using that for flare-ups when the Tobra isn't cutting it anymore.

Good luck!

I would try the Zithromax. Sometimes just the slight difference even within the same class can make a big difference, and I don't think it's quite as strong. At any rate, you won't know unless you try- you can always d/c it if it turns out to be just as bad.

Emily's biggest issue is definitely inflammation, so this is why we decided to give it a try. She started it in early July and made it to November before a big exacerbation- the longest she's gone without getting really sick since I can remember, so maybe it's been helping. It can be really hard to tell when you are already doing multiple things but her inflammation/asthma causes her a lot of misery when she gets sick, keeps her sick for a long time, and is starting to impact her endurance & energy levels even when well- so anything that can help even a little is worth a shot. Emily also only cultures staph. It can be difficult to deal with when she gets sick since it's resistant to a lot of orals but at least there is no PA, etc to deal with yet.

Thanks everyone for the input! I talked to my doctor about it last week and I think I am going to start it at my next clinic appt. He thought it might be a good idea for me to try. I forgot it was in the same class as Biaxin so I will ask him about that (I couldnt' tolerate it).

I am on Tobi every so often....I was on it last year for 3 cycles (6 months) and am on it again right now for 3 cycles (6 months). I don't culture PA (or haven't in 7 years) so it is more for treating my staph.

TQuestion for those on Preventative Antibioitics

The MWF zithromax is meant to help prevent bacteria from becoming mucoid specificially in patients who culture psuedomonas auerginosa
if the bacteria don't "ball up and get hard" other antibiotics are able to work on them.
