I'm glad you brought this up! I had wondered about that, too, and now I have learned something new . I am one of the odd ones (DDf508 with meconium illius surgery at birth) who is (mostly at this point) pancreatic sufficent (I have discovered that it does help a lot with a really greasy meal, and I am a bit more regular, but that may also be related to having my gallbladder out several years ago).
I started taking one Viokase 16 with lunch and dinner in hopes that it would help my CFRD by getting more fat in my system with the sugars. Then my cf doctor wanted me to take an enzyme with my diabetes pill 30 mins before I ate, and then take the usual one with my lunch or dinner. Um, okay did that twice and had the horrible, gassy, bloated to the point it was hard to walk, constipated stomach aches from my youth (when I was on enzymes before) in about 12 hours. Not doing that anymore and the pills seem to be working the same (but I've only been doing them for 5 days).
Said all that to say this- if she doesn't need them, it's good that her doctors are on top of that, instead of throwing the "one treatment fits all" thing that my doctors did when I was a kid. I would have been a lot happier child if they had tailored my treatment to my needs instead.
