Questions about intestinal blockages

This thought popped into my head from experience. As long as his stools arent floating I wouldnt play too much with the enzymes, but definitely look at other things. MY daughter (no CF) has HUGE stools. Its amazing that they can come out of her butt (TMI LOL). She has always been prone to constipation and one thing that triggers it is too much milk &/or not enough water. She doesnt get gass etc so its not lactose intolerance. Her stools dont float like CFers can, but definitely influenced by what she drinks. More so then what she eats. Good Luck!

We had problems with DS adjusting when we switched from formula with an ounce of cream in it, to whole milk & cream/whole milk with carnation instant breakfast. Major constipation issues. I was afraid we'd have to keep DS on formula for ever and he was already over 18 months old. It was plain old constipation and we ended up using milk of mag for several days to get things moving again. I'd also tried more fruit, prunes.. Poor little guy was in terrible pain, huge stools, hard tummy <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> ...

If you've decreased the fat in his diet, then you may need to adjust his enzymes. It's my understanding that in order to get to many enzymes -- enough to cause major problems, he needs to get a LOT of enzymes.

Sounds like he may need a little extra help to get things moving again, so hopefully your doctor can give him something.

Thanks! I believe it has something to do with switching from Pediasure to milk. Although he's had milk before, and its been almost 3-4 weeks since we switched.

We were able to cut back to 2 Creon 10, because the pediasure had so much fat in it. This was good, because he was at the daily max of enzymes, and still having loose stools. (Does anyone else's docs hate Pediasure? She swears it makes kids not eat. His nutritionist wants him to eat a lot of calories and carbs, but not tons of fat, because he's not really absorbing it anyway.) I also stepped up the juice/water quite a bit. I just wish she'd call me back and let me know if I could use milk of mag, or something like it, and how much to use. Like I said, he's never been really constipated before.

I was worried about some sort of blockage, but it seems to be normal constipation. Plus, since it hurt, he's decided he'll just hold it in, which makes it worse. Luckily, everything seems back to normal today. Thank you so much for all your advice/suggestions!

The local GI specialist ranted at me about DS being on Carnation Instant Breakfast with whole milk & cream. Gave me the standard line about "kids will eat when they're hungry". They'll only eat what they need.

However, time and time again DS has shown us that he WON'T eat what he needs. Since he was a newborn it was a struggle to get him to eat. So I'm all in favor of getting in him as many extra calories as possible. Our CF doctor in the City basically told us to find a high calorie food item or two to give DS on a regular basis. We chose the CIB with cream. He also told us that now is the time to get him USED to eating high fat, high calorie items. Some people, like my husband can't stand cream and only drinks skim milk 'cuz they feel anything higher in fat is too rich.

When i was about 14, I had a bad blockage and was in the hosp. My doctor came into the room and said-bloackages are caused by 1 of 3 things...not taking your enzymes, not taking your enzymes, or not taking your enzymes.....Yes, I was too embarassed to take them at school and was throwing them in the garbage. And the doc was ratting me out in from of my mom.

Do not ever not give your kid enzymes b/c you think it will loosen his stools-its strange, but it does the opposite in fact. Not good! He may need an increase, or a stool softener for constipation. Ask your cf team.
