questions about ports

Mind if I hijack this slightly and ask- can you swim with a port? And does anyone know of a link that shows one (not asking for a pic of yours, don't worry - like, a medical link...). Are there any activity restrictions with a port?

Yes you can swim and take baths because the port is under the skin. My son has one and the only limitation he has are the ones he sets for himself. He can do everything every other kids does. Sure he needs to be careful not to get hit in the chest and if he has it accessed he cant play gym or recess because he has a needle sticking out of his chest, but otherwise he is just as active as any of my other children.

I think it is a personal choice what you limit yourself to when you have the port.

But thats just my opinion.

You can swim, bath, play, etc just like anybody else. The Port is placed under your skin so it is protected. As Victoria said, the only limitation are the ones you put on yourself. You have to be careful not to hit it, specially when it is accessed because you have a needle sticking out of it. You cannot swim or bath (as u normally would) when it is accessed. For bathing, you just have to take precautions not to get it wet, the doctors can probably tell you the best way to protect it. You do not want to get the dressing on an access port wet. It can cause problems with bacteria getting in.

Thanks. I have heard of people talking about ports before, but I wasn't sure about just how that worked.

Sorry Kylie, I don't know. What is a "peripheral"? Does that mean just a regular short iv ?

pretty please answer my questions. are they peripherals or piccs. who is putting them in?</end quote>

Sorry Kylie. I didnt see your question. They are not Piccs, I have had those before. I believe IV lines are considered peripheral. It's not really an IV line as far as Intravenously. A port is put in only by a surgeon. The port has a reservoir with a catheter that goes into the heart. I might not be explaining it very well. I found this article, http://www.vak12ed.edu/VDOE/In.../SHCP2circulatory.pdf, go to page 4., it might help.

It says: "The most commonly seen type of CVC (Central Venous Catheter) is a Totally Implanted Device (TID) such as the Port-A-Cath or Infus-A-Port. This CVC consist of a small reservoir that is totally implanted under the skin. When it is not being used, it has no tubing on the outside of the skin, does not need a dressing, and has lower risk of becoming infected..."

I access my port myself. Just asking for a show of hands here, would anyone be interested in a little slideshow (maybe I could put it on CFtube or post a link and put it on my blog) of the process? Anyone interested please say "aye."
