I know you that your income is a big factor in what kind of help you receive. That being said, what happens when you inheirate money/socks/bonds/cds? Is there a wavier when this is the case? What do you do? I think the amout of money one can receive is $3100/month.

Dougs dad was just diagonosed w/ small cell cancer in his lungs, they have given him a year with treatments. He is the only child so he receives everything! So we were concearned since Reece does receive SSI & medicaid. We defentely dont want to loose that. HAs anyone been in this situation?

I haven't been in the situation with my parents inheriting money as I got SSI and Disability after I turned 18.

I will say this though. I had a large sum of money my grandparents had given me in a CD. It was larger than I was able to have and keep my benefits - so before I applied for SSI I switched to CD to my mom's name. She keeps it in a separate savings account and I am able to get any when I need it. She just transfers money to me.

I don't know if you know anyone that you trust enough to have the money put in their name. If so that is a possibility - it is very risky though as you would be putting it in someone elses hands legally and that takes alot of trust in the other person.

Also have you called and asked the SSI/Disability office about inheritances and so on. They may be able to help you. You could also talk to an attorney that helps with Social Security cases and maybe find out if there is a way to work around that. Maybe if you put the money in CD form it won't effect your earnings. You could then split the money up into several smaller portions - below what you are able to get a month. If you split the money up and put them into different types of CDs they could/would mature at different times making it so they never effected the disability all at the same time.

Again I don't know if that is even possible but just a thought. I would call an attorney and maybe talk to them if you don't get anywhere with the Social Security office. Make sure it is an attorney that is familiar with social security and disability though that way they will be more experienced with those issues.

Hope you get it worked out.

I know in NY that on the application they ask if you are aware of any potential settlements from a lawsuite or inheritance so yes it would cause a problem as some point. In the past (when I worked) we had patience make sure certain assetts etc were not in their name, but you have to be careful on timing also so its not to be held against you. I would definetely run it past Beth Sufian to assure what is what in your state!

Inheritance is considered income and used in SSI/Medicaid determinations.

When my husband and I set up our family trust/wills our lawyer advised us against leaving anything to Sean as it would negatively impact his ability to receive government aid.

Right now we live in a single wide with three growing kids and are feeling a bit overcrowed so we want to get us a bigger place. I was wndering how that would affect us and was wondering how to finda out. Thanks for letting us know.
