I did everything my sister did - this included going to water parks, covering ourselves head to toe in mud, to playing in the lake, and having pet worms.

Just like Jessica, we did anything we wanted growing up - swimming lakes and oceans, learning to swim in the local public pool, playing in the dirt/mud, going to water parks, playing sports, etc. We had no restrictions. And I was really healthy (and still am) and my brother died when he was 13. We never even cultured the same bugs and we lived together in the same house (duh). I even kept up our small vegi garden every year as a child. And to this day I still love to vegi garden - I have a very large garden going on right now (we live on almost a half acre). I don't work the soil though - I pay our gardener to till it up for me every year. But only because I just don't want to do the work DH is the one who cleans out our chicken coop though.

I think I would have been pretty resentful of not being able to do activities I saw others doing if my mom had told me "no you can't do that because you have CF" or "it is bad for your lungs". But that is just my opinion

It is not only your opinion, from what I have seen here. It is what I see posted over and over and over again by the adults in this community.

Input from the many adults here about matters like this has played a part in the decision-making process I make for my child, as well... I consider those who have lived with this disease for many years to be a 'voice' for my child.

(edited to clarify my previous post.)

Well it *is* just my opinion. If others happen to share it, that isn't something I can control. We all make choices that are best for our own lives. I have made lots of "unpopular" decisions in my life and I am very happy with them. We all do the best we can.

I agree with Caroline. Some of the choices i made for my dd might not be very popular and are definitely not the mainstream on the forum, but as an adult with a chronic desease myself, i really know way too well what it is like to be sick/in the hospital all the time. That is why i feel that certain restrictions are reasonable to keep one's health and have free time to do things others than treatments.

again this is just my view and i perfectly respect those who do not share it.

Harriett - I understand now I know the desire to protect our children - even the non CF ones like mine. But at the end of the day, it is about how well we lived our lives and even taking some risks to our health here and there. And I'll die happy knowing that CF never held me back.
