DS was on formula until he was 18 months old 'cuz every time we switched he got horribly constipated. Eventually he got used to whole milk -- actually carnation instant breakfast made with whole milk and cream. Also added olive oil and butter to a lot of his foods. Whole milk yogurt....

Liza, it is so interesting to me how different kids can be! That amount of fat would send Owen into the ER! He cannot tolerate that much fat, even with Creon. The vomiting would cause dehydration and has even made him go into some kind of shock. I am so glad your son can handle that!
amndmnk, have you ever heard of eosinophilic disease? I am not trying to play doctor but so much of your son's digestive symptoms sound like Owen's used to. And if enzymes are not helping, maybe it is not so much fat malabsorption but something else. Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a non-IgE mediated allergy (so an traditional allergy test would be negative) due to to many eosinophils (a specific white blood cell). Eos can be found in the esophogus, small and large intestine by doing a scope. I was just thinking it might be worth looking at. FTT and vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain are symptoms. Unfortunately, it takes a good GI to figure it out. I can give you more info if you are interested, maybe you have already tested for it though, sorry to be redudant if you have!

the enzymes actually seem to be helping. i have no idea if that could be indicative one way or the other. the constipation has eased as well as the bitter smell. however i will mention this to the GI because at this point I am just trying to eliminate every possibility even the remotest. his first GI had actually said the same thing, carnation breakfast mixed with whole milk. I have recently tried it again but mixed with rice milk, which doesnt seem to bother him too horribly. i give him a high protein meal replacement twice a day so the carbs and calories without too much extra protein are very welcome.
