This may be an odd question, but I was wondering - does anyone here with CF have a tattoo? I'd like to get one, but was wondering if their are additional precautions because of CF. Any info or resources would be greatly appreciated.

I have two tattooes. The only precaution is the same one for everyone... make sure you go to a clean place. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Ahhhh yes, that's a good concern too. But if it means a lot to you, and you can Vest or clap around it, tattooes heal pretty quickly. So just make sure you've got a plan before you do it, if it's on your chest/stomach.

Reminds me of (for some odd reason) a tattoo that I heard about. A lady (I think) with a double lung transplant had six five roses, roses not the saying, tattooed on and around her transplant scar. When I went to go get my navel pierced I found out that that was the place that had done that tattoo in the first place.

Random. I'm sure a reputable tattoo artist would be able to answer any questions about cleanliness, and other precautions.

I've got one. If you are like me an on the anemic side, you may want to take an extra Vitamin K pill.

Seems backward from when I was in your age group...Back then women didn't get TATs and men did...Not one guy responding to this yet...OK I've got a TAT on my shoulder...A midlife crisis TAT at THAT...

The TAT artist has just poked hundreds if not thousands of holes into your skin. Keep the TAT area clean and dry the first day. After the bandage comes off next day, just use hypoallergenic scent free hand lotion to keep the area moist for a week or so. Don't gob it on, just a light application however often it is necessary to keep the TAT from drying out.

Some people recommend Neosporin to be applied a day or so after you get the TAT. Use Neosporin with caution. Some folks get skin reactions (read rash) to lots of Neosporin gooped all over a new TAT. Use of peroxide as a preventive disinfectant is not recommended due to the fact that it may bleach the inks somewhat and spoil your new TAT.

I got a full back piece exactly one year after my dl tx, and as soon as I get the money I will be getting some more....

but my back piece was for my first year anniversary....(meaning behind the tatt, black rose represents the death of my donor, the serpent is my cf and the phoenix of course is my rise from death, all up it took over 11 hours, but worth every min)

only other thing I can add is, choose your design carefully, as its with you for life....

I have two and didn't have any problems with either of them. I got them both last year after I got the CF diagnosis. One is a unicorn (which is supposed to be able to heal you from anything) along with a nice "stick it to CF" phrase in Japanese, and the other is Japanese Kanji representing the people in my life who are important. The unicorn is on my arm, the kanji is on my leg.

I'm attaching a picture of my unicorn (and you'll notice my PICC line).

Hi,

if the coulors of the tatoo contain iron there could be problems if a MRT/NMR has to be done, because they could heat up during the procedure.

I got a butterfly on my shoulder blade when i was 19. It healed really fast no problem....just remember to put that triple antibiotic on it like the artist says......go somewhere that is well-known as clean and has a great artist...the guy that did mine was awarded the best women's tattoo award that year..the tatoo looks great..you don't want a newby drawing on you!!

I had a friend who had a newby do work on her & her boyfriend. They did this because they really wanted one & were short on cash & since this guy was still learning she wouldnt charge. So basically been sure of the quality I was getting. LOL....to each his own!

I have a small one on the top of my foot, near the toes. It healed great & I still love it 15 years later. The only concerns w/ CF that I know of are choosing the location, i.e. picc line areas & such... and, since some of us heal slower than those w/o CF, be extra diligent to follow the post-procedure care instructions.

I've got three tattoos. My last tattoo I got done in June and its completly healed. Its on my upper part of my shoulder blade, and I cannot do clapping on it. When I do clapping on it - it gets irritated and raised and hurts. Stick with the vest, or whatever therapy machine you use. Tattoos will not affect your cf. Just make sure you go to a reputable shop that's clean and has very good artists. Someone previsouly mentioed using neosporin on a tattoo - never do that!! Never ever put a triple antibiotic on the ink i.e. bacitracin, A&D, neosporin. A tattoo has to scab over to heal, and if you use a triple antibiotic cream, it will treat the tattoo like a scab and all of your ink will "bleed" out and make the tattoo look ugly. Plain old unscented lubriderm is perfectly fine to use.

Good luck with any ink you may be getting. Once you get one they can be addicting. I have three, and am going for my 4th on saturday, followed by at least 4 more pieces after that.

Reputable artists hardly ever use ink that has iron/mercury in it anymore. The only colour ink I've heard of that uses some iron is the colour red. MRT/NMR heating a tattoo up is an urban legend. I've asked around, and that's simply not the case anymore. The ink will not heat up and explode. Same with epidurals. You can still get an epidural even if you have a tattoo on your lower back. The only time an epidural would cause a problem is if the ink is new and fresh. You have to remember that the ink only goes into the first few layers of your skin, and an epidural goes farther in.
