Readiness for Kindergarten - OT

I love kindergarten!!! I am a full day kindergarten teacher (or was until Feb. and am hoping to go back in August) and used to teach half day as well. This question comes up all the time from parents. Only parents really know their child and know if they are ready. Kindergarteners do a lot of growing up that first year. I have had 4 year olds enter my class who were ready (they didn't turn five until August 30th, and cut off is Sept. 1) and 5 year olds who were not (and vice versa). This year alone I had 4 kiddos with May birthdays, 2 with June birthdays, and 1 with a July and 2 with August. They were a young group of kinders (and that doesn't happen too often). The big focus in kindergarten is socialization and maturity, but now there is a big push in academics as well(hence the push for full day kindergarten). Those first 3 or 4 weeks are going to be tough, he is going to come home just exhausted. It will definielty be a big adjustment. The days will be really long for him. Hopefully the school allows at least a 15-30 minute quiet/nap time. Just do what you think is right for him, most teachers are great listeners and will listen to why you feel he is ready. If they have concerns they will voice them, but I'm a big advocate of let's give it a try and if it's not working we will figure out something different. Good luck in your decision.

Oh, one more thing your child's school should have a checklist called "Is Your Child Ready For Kindergarten" or something along those lines. Ask for it. If they don't have one let me know and I will find a copy of the one my school gives to parents. You can also look it up online<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Sarah is a July baby and we had the same question when it was kindergarten time. We went ahead and started her because she was definately ready academically. Our feeling was that we could always pull her out, or redo kindergarten if she was struggling too much.

She ended up doing great, completing that year and moving on to 1st grade without any problems. Almost 5 years later now, I know we made the right choice.

But as others have said, you know your son the best so do whatever YOU think is best for him.

My 14 yr old boy is an August 30th baby, and we sent him early. So he will graduate when he is 17. He has always done fine thru sports and grades. I wouldn't be afraid to send him early.
