Reasons I love my port

Reasons I am so in love with my port.

1. No more PICC lines. The sheer agnony of finding my veins and actually getting them to take the picc line was a nightmare for me. The very thought of having myself accessed within a matter of a few nearly painless minutes makes me giddy!

2. IV abx when I need them, no waiting, no putting thme off...just doing it.

3. My arms no longer hurt while on IVs from Phlebitis. I can continue my active life while on IVs. Everything is nearly pain-free (have I mentioned that yet?!)

4. I can do everything myself, without a struggle. No more holding the picc line between my teeth so I can screw on the saline syringe...no more extensions that are always getting in the way of what my hands are doing.

5. No one needs to know! The port in my chest is much easier to cover than a picc in my arm...enough said.

I love my port...I hope to have this one a long time, and even if I don't, I WILL get another one.

Christina- WELL SAID:)

My son has had his port since he was 2 months old and he will be 9 on Sunday- it has been a great thing. He had picc lines, iv's int he first 2 months of his life and the port made it so much nicer. Now that he has had it the last almost 9 yrs he has used it for blood draws, i.v.'s, surgery's --- what a great thing. I have to say another great thing is the G-tube. I am so glad these sorts of things are available for people with Cf.

Hey Christina,
I am glad to hear you love your port. You said everything is nearly pain-free. What part is painful? They have been saying Makailyn may need other resource's , because her veins are getting so bad, and the PICC 's have swollen up her arms and bright red and soooooooo painful for her.

What did they do when they put it in? How did they sedate you?
Sorry for all the questions.
Many blessings coming your way,,,,Karla <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Thanks Christina!
I'm getting one next week and was a little apprehensive. I'e been reading online a bit today.
I had a port on my upper leg 1994-1999 but it caused a bunch of problems and the skin was always very sensitive.
This time it will be the subclavian type. I was concerned of sensitivity, and being able to excercise (5 Tibetans / pushup-type), and sleeping on my side. And possible complications during the operation. But it seems it'll be all right.
Greetings from a hospital in Spain! it's hot and sticky but i get to watch the sea...
