red stripe down center of tongue?

A couple of months ago I noticed a darker red stripe down the center of my son's tongue. It doesn't come all the way down to the tip of the tongue, so it's hard to see unless he's really screaming or laughing, and if I ask him to show me or stick out his tongue, of course, he won't show me. I've never noticed this before until a couple of months ago. I think he may have had a cough and been on bactrim at the time, I kind of dismissed it because he was sick. But last week I was tickling him and noticed it again, so I keep checking, and it's still like that. He's not sick at all, and has not just had something red or hot so I don't know what's causing it. And he hasn't even had a cough or cold in months. The rest of his mouth looks entirely normal and pink, no white, no spots, just a very red stripe. Anyone ever have this before? I'm going to ask about it at clinic the end of this month, just curious if anyone has ever seen this before? Maybe a med that he's on? (Creon, zantac, periactin, chewable grape vitamin, duoneb, pulmozyme, Qvar inhaler)
I tried looking it up online but didn't get much.

okay I just want to bump this once so the daytime people can see it. If no one replies I'll let it go I promise!

I have no idea what that is,

but my daughter's tongue always has a split/crack in it (down the middle) and when she is on iv's (meropenem) and (tobramyacin) and eats pkt chips it almost splits/cracks to the tip.

The doc has no idea why it is doing it, but he says its a common thing with some people.

maybe it could be the start of a split/crack.

I would get the docs to check it out just to relieve your worry.

Someone on another health forum I sometimes go on suggested I google "median rhomboid glossitis" and I think that may be it. From what I read, recent studies link it to candidiasis, so it could be a thrush type thing from nebs and inhalers, even though it's not the typical white patches. We usually just rinse after nebs, and Vinny doesn't really know how to swoosh, so I guess we'll have to brush after instead. I'm definately going to bring it up at our next appt at the end of the month.

I was going to mention thrush, but without the white I wasnt sure it definitely applied. When I get thrush its not the "white", but more of just really "raw" and sensitive areas of my ton. I have gotten in the very back of my tongue and on the very tip. Cant imagine what else it might be if its not "thrush family related".

Amber, I have been having a problem with epiglottitis candidiasis - fancy name for yeast in the mouth/throat. My tongue is coated and has a fissure down the middle - darker color and it seems like it has branches off of it - like streams and a river. They tell me it is from inhaled meds - so we stopped Advair (changed to Serevent) but I am still using Tobi. I am using Nystatin for the yeast. There is a formula fondly called "swish and swallow" which helps.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I thought thrush too, but I wasn't sure since there's no typical white patches. It's like a red stripe down the center of the tongue, but only halfway, not to the tip. And it's very smooth in the red stripe. Other than that his mouth looks healthy as can be, and he doesn't seem to be having any discomfort when eating.
